Daniel Edward Chappell Battle Creek Daniel Edward Chappell, age 77, of Battle Creek, died surrounded by his family at Battle Creek Health System on March 1st, 2009. Dan was born on February 28, 1932 in Jackson, MI, son of the late Daniel August and Genevieve (Snyder) Chappell. Dan grew up in Jackson, was a 1950 graduate of St. John's Catholic School, graduated from Jackson Junior College and in 1954 received his Bachelors of Arts from Michigan State College School of Journalism. He served in the Naval Reserve from 1950 to 1960. Dan was a retail advertising representative at the Battle Creek Enquirer for 40 years, and for The Senior Times for 10 years. Dan married Jane Brydges at St. Philip Catholic Church on January 26, 1957. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Jane (Brydges) Chappell; six children: Julie (Tim) Ryan, Janet (Mike) Ashton, Jeanine (Tony) Plushnik, Jacqueline (Mark) Stevens, Daniel Charles Chappell, Matthew Chappell and Jair Rabello; ten grandchildren: Michael Timothy Ryan, Matthew and Andrew Ashton, Ashley and Rachel Plushnik, Christina and Michelle Stevens, McKenzie, Daniel John, and Ian Chappell. In addition to his family, his passion was sailing. He taught his entire family and countless others how to sail. He was active in the lightning fleet of Gull Lake for 35 years. Past Commander of the Kalamazoo Power Squadron, Past Commodore of the Gull Lake Yacht Club; and a current member of the Bay Shore Yacht Club, Dan continued to sail every moment possible on his beloved Tartan, "Chaps", cruising the Great Lakes, and beyond. He was an Eagle Scout and a proud leader of the Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, the Navy League and Jackson Jaycees for many years. Dan was a history buff, meticulous woodworker and calligrapher. He received many awards for marksmanship. Dan has been an active member in St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was known for his quick wit, quips, clichés and storytelling. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, who will be sadly missed by all. At the request of the family, friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home where they will be received 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. and where The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009.
