Ruth McAllister Obituary

Ruth L. "Fern" McAllister Battle Creek Ruth L. "Fern" McAllister, 92, of Battle Creek, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility, surrounded by her family. She was born December 16, 1916 at home in E. Leroy Twp. the daughter of Ernest and Norma (Dilsaver) Root and attended school in E. Leroy. Fern was a homemaker, her family was her life. On May 23, 1940 Ruth L. Root was united in marriage to Frank M. McAllister in Assyria. Frank preceded her in death in 1972. She is survived by her daughter, Norma (Bob) Hamilton of Battle Creek; sons, Larry McAllister of Battle Creek, Dennis (Sheila) McAllister of Andover, KS; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and three sisters, Bessie Basgnall of Tennessee, Bernice Daniels of Nashville and Grace Thorp of E. Leroy. Ruth was also preceded in death by a son, Alvin; brother, Harold Root; and a good friend, Leon Culp. Fern was a firm supporter of the PTA, enjoyed sewing and loved spending time with her grandchildren. At the request of the family, friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2009, at Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, one hour prior to the funeral service at 3:00 p.m., with Pastor Tim P. Smothers officiating. Interment will be next to her husband at West Leroy Congregational Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to Emily Andrus Home or to Calhoun County Medical Care Facility. Personal remembrances may be made at www.farleyestesdowdle.com

Fern was a wonderful and humble person I knew as I worked at the same facility as she did. She was a hard worker that helped her son thru school never caring what she had. I think of her often and she brings a smile to my face. We will see you again my friend.

Oh, I am so sad for Fern's family. Our family is dwindling-one less smiling face at our annual family reunion. I remember Fern coming ever since I can remember. My condolences to Fern's whole family.
