Graham Colquhoun Obituary

Graham F. Colquhoun Battle Creek Graham F Colquhoun, MD, age 89, of Battle Creek and Ft. Myers Beach, FL, died peacefully in Ft. Myers Beach, FL March 11, 2009. He was born June 30, 1919 in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada to the late Fraser and Gladys (Moffit) Colquhoun. Although he worked briefly with schoolmates in the local salmon fishing industry, he soon went on to receive an undergraduate degree in pharmacy. Graham worked with his father, also a pharmacist at the Owl Drugstore in N. Sydney. He then received his medical degree in (1944) from Dalhousie University in Halifax, N.S. During WW II, as there was a shortage of physicians in the United States, Graham was called to Northern Maine as a general practitioner, where he delivered over 100 babies one year. In 1945, he moved to New York City where he completed an internship at Bellevue Hospital. He then completed his ophthalmology training at the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary. While in New York, he trained under Dr. Conrad Berens, world- renowned ophthalmologist, author, and eye physician for Helen Keller. In 1951, Graham moved to Battle Creek, recruited by Drs. Sleight, Lowe and Albright, to practice in the Security National Bank Building. He married Bonnie Lee Rabe, daughter of Norman and Cletah in 1953. In the late 1970's Graham welcomed Dr. Paul Gieser into his ophthalmology practice on College Street, from which he retired in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Colquhoun; children, Breah (Colquhoun) Mohr and Bill Mohr, Drs. P. Jeffrey and Diane (Fredal) Colquhoun and Heather (Colquhoun) Avila and Dr. Albert Avila; and 7 grandchildren, Matthew Mohr, Megan Mohr, Audrey Avila, Andrea Avila, Peter Colquhoun, Gillian Colquhoun and Brigitte Colquhoun. Graham was a very dedicated and loving father, husband and physician. He enjoyed spending time with his family on the water, especially while boating on Lake Michigan as well as deep sea fishing on occasion. Most importantly, Graham was giving of his resources. His favorite charities were First Wesleyan Church, First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, and the Haven of Rest Ministries. Graham was involved in a men's bible study in Ft. Myers where he grew in faith in Christ in his later years. The family will receive friends at Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 2009.
