Carl King Obituary

Carl David King Newaygo Carl David King, age 86 of Newaygo and formerly of Springfield, Michigan, passed away Monday, June 1, 2009 at his home. Carl was born on July 13, 1922 in Edgerton, Ohio to Benjamin Lawrence and Ethel May (Bowersox) King. Carl married Betty Jane Mapes and she preceded him in death in 1948. He married Helen Mary Sass McCormick and she also preceded him in death in 1971. He married Margaret L. Campbell on November 13, 1971 in Olivet, Michigan. Carl worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps and later started work in a military airplane bomber factory in Ypsilanti until he joined the United States Army. Upon return from the military, he started work for the City of Battle Creek, had worked for the Eaton Corporation and had worked part time as a security guard at Miller indoor and outdoor theatres. Carl eventually started work for the City of Springfield and retired in June 1985 as a Public Works Supervisor for the City of Springfield. Carl enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting; taking care of his yard and was known for his slogan, "if you don't like the style, get out of the pile". Carl served in the United States Army during World War II in Europe and Africa where he had been a P.O.W. and had received the Purple Heart award. He is survived by his wife, Margaret L. of Newaygo; his son, Dale A. Campbell of Richmond, Virginia; daughters, Susan (Alvin) Taylor of Battle Creek, Sherry (Tim) Knipp of Ashland, Kentucky, Merry (Jack) Leclear of Burlington, Michigan, Penny (Ray) Stout of Serveville, Tennesee; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; his sister, Marilyn (Gene) Rupp of Montpelier, Ohio; several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his son, Carl David King Jr. in 1993 and by his son-in-law, Grant Bruish in 1994. Visitation Wednesday, June 3, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at the Crandell Funeral Home - White Cloud Chapel with services at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation Friday, June 5, 2009 at the Royal Funeral Home - Battle Creek, Michigan from 5-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Services Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. the Royal Funeral Home - Battle Creek. Interment in Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may go to the Church of the donor's choice or Hospice of Michigan, Newaygo County.
