Ruth C. Guerin

Ruth C. Guerin Marshall Ruth C. Guerin, 101, passed away peacefully Friday, April 3, 2009, at Maplewood of Marshall. Ruth Cameron Calkins was born January 28, 1908 in Buffalo NY. She was the third daughter of George "The Boss" and Elizabeth "Connie" (Patton) Calkins. At 17 she entered Cornell University to which she had won a scholarship, graduating four years later with honors. She was married to Herbert A. Guerin in 1936. They moved to Marshall in 1999 and he preceded her in death in 2001. Her parents and three sisters also preceded her in death. Mom was truly a remarkable lady. Ruth is survived by sons George (Marijke) Guerin of Ceresco MI, Donald Guerin of Sacramento CA; grandsons Martin (Lori) Guerin of Portage MI and Frank (Laura) Guerin of Traverse City MI. She also leaves twogreat-grandsons, Liam and Josh Guerin, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. While at Cornell she pledged to Delta Gamma sorority and was active in the Chicago West Suburban chapter until 1999. She was also a member of the DND's women's club, a member of the Woodlands-Highlands Association, Hinsdale, Illinois, and an honorary member of the Père Marquette Rod and Gun Club. Both Ruth and her husband, Herb, enjoyed Big Band, Dixieland, jazz music, ballroom dancing and playing bridge. During the first years of their marriage they moved frequently, finally settling in Hinsdale, Illinois. After Herb retired, they took numerous trips all over the world. At her family's request, the Memorial Service to celebrate Ruth's life will be held on Saturday, June 20th at 11:00 a.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek, with Mr. Raymond R. Sikkenga, officiating. Family and friends are invited to a time of fellowship and sharing memories of this remarkable lady.
