Lenoir Quimby Obituary

Lenoir K. Quimby Augusta Lenoir Quimby, 82, died Saturday, August 22, 2009, with her loving family at her side. She was born Dec. 14, 1926 to Edna B. and Chaldon B.Kinney in Battle Creek. One of a family of seven, she was a resident of the Battle Creek area all her life. She was proud of being a "straight A" student at Battle Creek Central. She started working for the Telephone Company her junior year in high school, graduating early in 1945. She continued to work for the Phone Company until the birth of her daughters. She married William Raymer in 1949. He preceded her in death in 1964. She worked as an executive secretary at the Kellogg Company from 1963-1967. She married Kenneth Quimby in 1967. He preceded her in death in 1992. Also preceding her in death are her parents, one brother and one sister. She was a member of the First Congregational Church. She was a committed bowler and an avid gardener. She was a skilled seamstress, an exacting painter of woodwork and trim and a tremendous cook. She loved good food with family and friends and adored gatherings that included a buffet table laden with goodies. Her favorite TV channel was "The Food Channel," even after her illness made eating a chore. She was fond of Dixieland Jazz, particularly when it was performed by her friends, "The New Superior Jazz Band" at the Bayview Gardens, Gull Lake on Sundays. She was a magnet for homeless animals and always had time in her life and room in her heart for one more. She always kept a menagerie of cats and dogs, which were primarily rescues and always enjoyed having a cat on her lap. She will be sorely missed by her surviving daughters, Gloria (Cary) Devendorf of Battle Creek, Kerry Raymer of Augusta, Jennifer (David) Sterchele of Galesburg, and four grandchildren, Sarah Kennedy, Kayla Morgan, Joseph Devendorf and Kelsey Morgan. At the request of her family, friends may call on Wednesday, August 26th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek. The funeral service to celebrate Lenoir's life will be held on Thursday, August 27th at 11:00 am at the Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leah Roberts-Mosser, Associate Pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Battle Creek. Gloria and Kerry, I am so sorry that your Mom has passed away. Please excuse me for not paying my respects, I just found out Sunday when I was out a memorial park, my Dad passed away June 14th and Sunday was his birthday. I said an extra prayer for all of you. Please let me know if there is anything I can do or if you just every need to talk. I always loved your Mom's great laugh and the way she could snap her gum, I was always trying to do that when I was younger, just like her.

Kerry, Gloria and Jennifer,
I just heard about your mother. I am so glad I had a chance to visit with her last summer when I was visiting Wanda. It was so nice to visit a house from my youth where I recall very good times. Your Mom told me things I didn't remember, like my Dad helped build that house. There were so many memories when was invited inside. Your Mom had great stories of my Mom and Dad. They were great friends. I know your Mom will be missed, but just remember, she was a great friend to all who knew her.
