Bernie Parent Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 22 to Sep. 23, 2025.
Bernie Parent, the Philadelphia Flyers icon whose brilliance in goal delivered the franchise's only two Stanley Cup championships, died September 21, 2025. He was 80. The Flyers announced his death; no cause was disclosed. A former teammate told the Associated Press that Parent died in his sleep.

Born April 3, 1945, in Montreal, Parent debuted with the Boston Bruins in 1965 and joined the expansion Flyers in 1967. He also played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and spent one season in the WHA with the Philadelphia Blazers.

Parent's peak came on his return to Philadelphia in 1973 after his brief stint in the WGA. Over the next two seasons, he authored one of hockey's greatest runs, leading the Flyers-nicknamed the "Broad Street Bullies"-to back-to-back titles in 1974 and 1975. He earned the Vezina Trophy and the Conn Smythe Trophy in both years, posting Cup-clinching shutouts against Boston in 1974 and Buffalo in 1975.

His 1973–'74 regular season featured an NHL-record 47 regulation victories at the time, part of 91 wins across those two seasons. Parent's dominance built a civic mythology in Philadelphia, captured on bumper stickers that read, "Only the Lord Saves More Than Bernie Parent."

On February 17, 1979, when he was just 34, Parent's NHL career came to an end when he suffered an eye injury during a game against the New York Rangers. The Flyers retired his No. 1 that October, and he entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984. In 2017, the NHL named him among its 100 Greatest Players.

Parent finished his NHL career with 271 wins, 54 shutouts, a 2.55 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage across 608 regular-season games.

Admired for his warmth as much as his excellence, Parent remained a beloved team ambassador. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman hailed him as "a warm, gregarious bear of a man" whose mask was "the last sight you wanted to see" as a shooter, and Flyers governor Daniel J. Hilferty remembered his "pure love of life."

In retirement, Parent engaged deeply with the Philadelphia community, including support for Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education. He was a fixture at team events and remained generous with fans and young players.

It´s difficult to put in words the profound effect Bernie Parent had on me and so many young men coming of age when he showed us what a championship meant to our city of brotherly love. Decades later my son honored me with his signed jersey which hangs in my office. His legacy as a sports figure and gentleman will live on in spirit.

Had the honor of watching the best from Sec. 33 at the Spectrum and while being a Blazergazer in 72. Wow, what a goalie!

Loved this man as a player on the ice, as well as who he was off the ice.. warm, good-humored, always a big bright smile for every fan! I wish I had met him just once, but managed to get a wave and that big smile drving by him once or twice, which felt just as warm as if I'd gotten a bear hug! He will be so sadly missed, but so deeply remembered. The picture is of a small shrine I've had up for years, it will remain up as long as I'm still around!

Sadness has befallen all of the old time flyers fans, with the passing of Bernard Marcel Parent, he was a gift from the heavens. Like the bumper sticker on my car in the 70´s said no even god saves more than Bernie. As a life long fan and long time season ticket holder, It was one of my lifetimes favorite memories to meet the man, the myth, the legend, Bernie Parent. Rest in peace my idol, you will be missed I was lucky to have been around and watched your great career. I used to loveto see you at the Sting Restaurant in king of Prussia where i worked.

A giant in the hockey world with that little twinkle in his eyes. The best goalie EVER who could still connect with the fans on a one-to-one basis, even for a few seconds at a meet and greet or such. SO glad I was old enough to feel the Flyers craziness and energy that was all around Philly during the 70s. Big hugs to Bernie's inner circle.

So very Sad about Bernie. He was the best 'technical' goalie I ever saw - he made playing goal look so easy, thanks to his mentor Plante during their 2 yrs in TO. More so, he was simply a nice, genuine person (and a big animal lover). I saw him play in person a few times, at the Spectrum and Cap Center and also saw him at the old Hershey Arena as a scout (my 'home rink since for nearly 60 yrs) often during the Bears/Flyers association, but never actually met him. My late mother-in-law did, however, at a restaurant in Avalon. As everyone else who met Bernie proclaimed: He was a true gentleman! I did this quick sketch below to honor him - being greeted by his best student, greatest teacher, and a few more recent additions to the 'eternal rink'. God rest his loveable soul!

Debbie and I are big Flyers fans especially during the broad Street bullies era. We had the opportunity to meet Bernie at a Flyers game in the Commerce Bank box when he stopped in to say hello. Debbie and l talked quite a long time with Bernie since Debbie was in charge of the banks box that night. We even got an invite to a fishing trip on his boat! What a great man! Rest in peace! Bernie - My late father Gil and my family crossed paths with you many times through the years, going all the way back to 1967 - when I was 8 and you were 22. How the time flew by. I will always remember your ever-present smile, the twinkle in your eye, your sense of humor, and your hearty laugh. You lived a wonderful life - and it was made even better by the joy you spread every day for decades, and the thousands of hearts you touched. You were a good man, and you will be missed. Best wishes to your lovely wife and family. May you rest in peace.

I was a season ticket holder and sat right behind the announcers box and penalty boxes. The Flyers were so exciting! I attended the seasons when the Flyers won the Stanley Cup 1974-1975. It was so exciting and Bernie never let the fans down with miraculous save after save. RIP Bernie
