Herbert Jessup Obituary

Herbert "Herb" Nelson Jessup Marshall Herbert Nelson Jessup, 85, died peacefully on Tuesday morning, October 20, 2009 at the Marshall Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Battle Creek on November 6, 1923 the son of Glenwood and Cora (Poole) Jessup. Herb graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1942 and furthered his education at Argubright Business College. He served his country as Naval Pilot in the United States Navy from 1943-1945 and continued to serve with the Naval Reserves until he retired with the Rank of Lieutenant Commander. Herb retired from Post Division General foods in 1983 after 40 years of faithful service. Herb married the former Donna O. Osborn on June 24, 1944, in Sanford, Florida where he was stationed in the United States Navy. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Donna; his sons, Stephen M. (Sue Ann) Jessup of Newton Township; a daughter, Carole S. (Joe) Tabiadon of Marshall; 5 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Herb was preceded in death by a son, Kerry R. Jessup on October 22, 2004; his parents and 3 brothers, Glenwood Jessup, Jr., Richard Jessup and Larry Jessup. After retiring, Herb and Donna spent nine years in New Port Richey, Florida. He is a former member of the Battle Creek Ski Club, AMVETS and the A.T. Metcalf Lodge #419 F.& A.M., Battle Creek. Herb enjoyed traveling with his wife, flying, woodworking, gardening and spending time with his family. At the request of the family, they will receive friends 5:00 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 22, 2009 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home. Funeral services to celebrate Herb's life will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 23, 2009 at the funeral home with Rev. Robert G. Muirhead, officiating. Interment with military honors rendered by the United States Navy will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to Binder Park Zoo. I am so saddened to hear of Herb's passing. I worked next to him in the accounting department at Post for 7 years. I always liked him very much. I am sure he will be missed. Living in Texas, I will not be able to attend the funeral, but my prayers are with his family.
