Nellie Johnson Obituary

Nellie M. Johnson East Leroy Nellie M. (Birman) Johnson, 95, of East Leroy and formerly of Battle Creek, passed away at the home of her daughter on November 17, 2009. She was born on February 13, 1914, in Barry County, Michigan to Bert and Sarah (Williams) Birman. Nellie lived her adult life in Battle Creek. She worked at the Battle Creek Stamping Company for several years and was also a telephone operator in Lacey, Michigan. While raising her family she was active in the Boy Scouts of America, Campfire Girls, Raymond School PTA, Battle Creek Rebekah Lodge, and later in the Leila Hospital Auxiliary. Her favorite hobbies were sewing and gardening. Nellie was a member of Fairfax Baptist Church. She married Mr. Lyman T. Johnson on October 23, 1937. He preceded her on August 20, 1976. She is survived by her daughters Freida Wygant of East Leroy and Linda (Richard) Carney of Union City, 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. She was preceded by her son Richard Johnson, daughter Ruth Carney, sister Bernice Bryans and brothers Paul, Orvin and Fred Birman. Family will receive friends from 2:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. and 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m., Thursday, at Royal Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Friday, November 20, 2009 at the family gravesite in Union Cemetery, Lacey, MI. Memorial contributions may be given to Lifespan or the Battle Creek Health System Auxiliary.

Freida, Linda and families, I am so sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in knowing your Mom is at peace. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time. I have many good memories of the times I spent at your family home. Your Mom was a very special person in my life.
