Elmer Mann Obituary

Elmer Lee Mann Battle Creek Elmer (Red) Mann, 80, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday evening November 15, 2009 at Battle Creek Health System, Battle Creek, MI. He was born November 1, 1929 in Osage City, Kansas the son of the late Walter and Ruby (Parks) Mann. After he graduated from Admire High School in 1948, he attended Emporia State Teachers College and taught school. In 1951, he served 2 years in the Army which took him over seas. In 1953, he attended Washburn College, in Topeka, Kansas and earned a Business Administration Degree. After receiving his BA degree, Red was employed 32 years for the United States Federal Government working up to a Computer System Analyst. During his career he lived in Topeka, Kansas, Ogden, Utah, Washington, D.C. and eventually moved to Battle Creek, MI in 1962. In 1985, Red retired at age 55, he became active with rental property and enjoyed making a comfortable residence for others. During his retirement years, he especially enjoyed traveling to the Western states to visit his relatives and sites. Fishing was his main passion over the years; he knew the "Best spots of the West." Over the years, Red acquired and adopted many stray pets when they needed a home. He also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds and squirrels that frequented his patio each day. Red really enjoyed being "Grandpa" which he spent many hours with his grand kids. He was married to Esther Joleen Johnson for 56 years, who survives. Surviving three children, Douglas (Karen) Mann of Chandler, AZ, Janice (Richard) Burdick of Battle Creek, MI, and Sheri (Curt) Ainsworth of Athens, MI; six grandchildren, Brittany Mann Renee and Mitchell Burdick, Travis, Kelsey and Jay Ainsworth. A private family memorial has been held. Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society South Central Michigan Arrangements by Richard A. Henry Funeral Home

"Red" wrote more programs after midnight, using "Hadley's Utility" to keep the system going than most programmers wrote in their total careers. Those were the "good old days"!
