James Patterson Obituary

James E. Patterson Battle Creek James Elliott Patterson, 88, of Battle Creek died January 4, 2010 at Battle Creek Health System. Jim went to be with his Lord and savior and was extremely happy to leave this wicked world to be forever at peace and joy in Heaven with the Lord and his wife, Helen. He was born April 23, 1921, the son of J. R. and Evis Janice (Sprague) Patterson in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He moved with his mother and brother to the United States on September 4, 1934. James graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1939; earned his Bachelor's Degree from Michigan State University in 1961 and his Master's Degree in History and Sociology from MSU in 1968. James was a member of two honorary societies, Phi Alpha Theta for history and Delta Sigma Rho for Speech. He taught for some time at Pennfield Schools, retiring in 1974. He also worked as an inspector for many years at Clark Equipment, Eaton Manufacturing, New York Air Brake and Oliver Farm Equipment. James married Helen M. Dunn in 1954. She died December 13, 1999. He was also preceded in death by his brother, William Patterson. He is survived by his nephews, William and James Patterson of Ohio and nieces, Joan and Janice. Jim was a member of the Battle Creek Host Lions Club, Lodge #12 F. & A.M., the Shriner's Club, the Jaycees and River Walk Community Church. Visitation, 5:00 7:00, p.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Shaw Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Shaw Funeral Home with Pastor Rich Verkaik officiating. Interment, Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Memorial donations may go to Good Samaritan Hospice Care, the Lions Club or River Walk Community Church, 1021 Wagner Drive, Battle Creek. Jim and Helen were great neighbors to us in Battle Creek. Our two children were their great pleasure and they enjoyed watching them grow up to become adults. We enjoyed having them as good friends too. May they both be a peace with our Lord.
