My daughter Lindsay just told me about Bob’s untimely death. What very sad news indeed. I regret I never met Bob personally but I considered him a kindred spirit. We would often pass each other in our identical maroon 87 Vanagons with a friendly flash of the lights. May peace and love be with your family.

I spoke with Bob a few times on the phone and exchanged e-mails, but like many people in the VW world, I knew him best from his entertaining, memorable and deeply knowledgeable posts on the Vanagon mailing list. It was always evident from his writing that he had a deep affection for these vehicles and a genuine interest in helping people. One probably gave rise to the other, or more likely they were mutually reinforcing.
While others say that Bob is at rest now, I can’t help but wonder if God called him to adjust the crankshaft end play or some such thing on the engine of the divine Westfalia, as anyone familiar with Bob’s work would agree that even God would need Bob’s help getting everything just exactly perfect.

To Bob Donalds Family:
As with most folks who knew Bob, he came into my life in an hour of need...my beloved Vanagon had blown the engine. Bob not only rebuilt my engine, he drove down to West Chester PA from Boston "on his way to Carlisle" so he could pick up three engine blocks I had. And he delivered an engine that now has 110,000 miles on it.
We spoke often after that, about fishing with his Daughter, spending time doing the simple things... taking the time to enjoy life.
In my busy career as a veterinarian doing house calls in my Vanagon, I think of Bob and thank him every day. And I will continue to....

My sincere condolences to Bob's family and friends. I grew up with Bob (Robby back then) in the early 60s and we built all sorts of things, like homemade mini-bikes from wheelbarrow wheels, washing machine parts, EMT tubing, the front halves of kid's bikes, and scrounged lawnmower engines. I remember the excitement of the first dune buggy Bob built.
At the time of his treatment for Hodgkins Disease in the early 1970s I remember visiting him and his concern for putting his friends at ease about his illness. He had a ponytail back then and delighted in pulling it up and showing you that the back portion of his head was bald.
I last saw Bob at our 27th high school reunion, about 10 years ago. What I remember about our re-connecting at that time was his love for and pride in his family - he had photos of each of them and stories about each one.

Bob was a good hearted guy who was consistantly positive and upbeat. When growing up in Newton we did a lot of fun things together and my memories of him and his family are fond. I sincerely extend my condolence to his family and I believe the world will be less without him

Bob's love and understanding of VW engines will be missed. I can't remember how long I've known him. He was one of those guys that took mechanical things and treated them as art. He will be missed by many.

Bob was a great guy. I have known him most of my life. He gave a lot of himself.
He gave me a job when I was in college.
He gave me first dibs on his old apartment when we were young and in need of an affordable place.
He gave my troubled brother a ride to the hospital on a cold lonely night when my brother sorely needed the ride. When I told Bob ‘Thanks’, Bob replied, “He is my buddy too Dom” referring to my Brother.
He will be missed.

I have only known Bob for a couple of years, but he taught me you have to have committment before you can have any pride in your work. He spoke to me often of his committment to and his pride in his family. Always a family man.
He was also a man who enjoyed some lively conversation and verbal banter as well as a good joke.
I wish I had known him 20 years ago when we were all a bit younger.

I was a frequent visitor to Bob's web site and bought some heads from him when my Carat's engine was rebuilt. I appreciate the advice he provided to Vanagon list members. Always accurate, he kept my van and many others going with his sage advice. His legacy will live on, even beyond the lifespan of our aging vans, because in many cases, it was timeless. Unfortunately, Bob and I had drifted out of touch over the past couple of decades, but I remember many great (and sometimes frustrating) times working on and having fun with what would now be considered vintage Volkswagens with Bob. I was fortunate to grow up in his neighborhood in Newtonville, and it was great to have someone like him to learn from, and to help me out as an amateur backyard and basement VW mechanic.
Though with Bob's advice I was able to successfully rebuild engines in air-cooled Volkswagens, I did not keep up with the technology as the years went by. I have no idea what's going on under the hood of my Golf, but I will always remember Bob as a very generous, helpful friend, and part of sharing my "good old days" of Buses, Beetles, and an occasional Grateful Dead concert. All the best wishes to his family and friends.

I didn't know Bobby that well but when I was a kid I lived a couple blocks from him. He always had a bunch of Volkwagen in various stages of repair in his garage and I used to love to watch him work on them, I remember he was a nice guy. Many years ago I had the privilege to work for Bob back when the shop was on Philips St and in Watertown Square “Bobs Motor Service”. Work was always mixed with fun and practical jokes shared. Did you know a VW camshaft dropped on the gear end from two feet would snap off clean! This was demonstrated many many times!!! Bob was a mentor, a patient teacher and a friend. At times I was frustrated by his generosity to others because I knew that he struggled financially because of it. But that was Bob always willing to help and offer advice to others. God speed Bob. I grew up around the corner from Bob. Although I didn't know him that well then (I am 9 years younger) I remember admiring his dune-buggies and other VWs he had in his yard. Fast forward many years I came to know him on a personal level when I moved to Wayland. I would stop by his house to talk life and VWs with him. Reading all that I have about him I realize just how much I will miss him.

Though I never had the opportunity to meet Bob in person, I at least had the pleasure of exchanging emails with him once or twice. I have read Bob's posts on the Vanagon List for years and always held his submissions in the highest regard. Bob's passing is a great loss to his immediate family, the community in which he resided, and to his extended family of VW owners around the world.

Bob was larger than life in the VW World & now in the greater world. Rarely am I affected so greatly by someone I never met in person, but still grew to respect as a friend & mentor.

I'm another one that never dealt with Bob or even had the occasion to talke to him. But I learned that any message from 'Boston Bob' was a must read because there would be good, sound information in that message. Bobs contributions will live on in the VW community for a long time and let's hope the lessons he taught us all are not forgotten.

Like many others who have already posted let me start by saying I never had the privilege of meeting Bob. However, I did have one hour long phone conversation with him - he was of course generously helping a stranger (me) fix a Vanagon problem. His sharing of his knowledge with the VW community is legendary. I think the void left by his passing will be impossible to fill.
The memories and words of others have proven that Bob was clearly more than a great VW mechanic - he was a great person and a wonderful soul.
My deepest sympathy and warmest wishes go to Karen and the children.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bob on one of my visits to Boston. He was pleasant and more than eager to stop working to talk. We talked about engines, some torque experiments he was working on, and rebuild techniques. Afterwards he insisted I go for a ride with him in his Westy with his own big valve engine in it. Bob was one of the most genuine people I have ever met. He touched many lives, always leaving people better off than when he met them. What a great man. We lost a great man, a great mechanic, a great friend. It is not just us that lost, the world lost. He will be sorely and forever missed.

I knew Bob from his excellent VW engine rebuilding and still have one of his engines in my Vanagon. I never met Bob face to face, living here in Iowa, but there are some folks that you can trust on their reputation alone and Bob was certainly one of those folks. He was never more than a phone call away and always supportive and full of helpful information when I needed it. His advice over the Vanagon list was frequently saved in my Eudora "Boston Bob" mailbox where it will remain for me to refer to. He had a business to run, but he also valued each of his customers and I am honored to have been one.
I wish the surviving family members strength through these upcoming months and wish I could do more than simply write an electronic thank you to Bob here. God has taken him to a better place, but take comfort in the fact the rest of you will be with him again one day. I know I'm looking forward to that day as well.

Bob saved me from a horrid rebuild, spent a lot of time on the phone "hand holdiing" and reassuring me. The result was a smooth-running 82 Westy. Bob's patience and sense of humor made the whole process of installing his beautiful engine almost painless.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bob in person at his shop. Installed several of his motors in my vans as well as a few list members. I've never met a person so willing to stop what he was doing and take a call and help out a fellow vanagon nut. Often he spent hours of his time helping me sort through issues even when it wasn't on one of his engines.
I remember arriving at his place after dark one time with a core motor in the back of a truck. We loaded the rebuilt in and I realized I had left the mounting bar on the core. "No problem' Bob said and handed me one from a near by pile of stuff. I traveled back to Michigan only to realize upon installation that the motor mount he gave me was for a Syncro and yes, there is a difference between a Syncro motor mount bar and a 2wd motor mount bar. He seemed surprised to learn that, and I was surprised the Oracle Boston Bob didn't know everything! I sit here and remember the little bit of time I was able to spend with him fondly.
He loved his work, his wife and especially his daughter. My condolences go to his family. He will be sorely missed by me and many others I am sure.

Mr. Boston Bob (Donalds) is the first person that I've never met, but who's passing caused me to feel profound sadness. I "know him" through his internet posts, tales of wonderful engines, and stories of being a upstanding person. Bob's huge number of friends stands testament.
Right now, I have a feeling Bob, John Muir, and other VW legends are up to something special.

Bob was a great friend from the first moment I met him that was just his style.I worked with him for some time where I learned more about life and becoming the person that I have become today than about engines most days.I would see him smiling sitting behind a big pile of heads at the boring bar and would ask him what was up.He would say " Johnny I'm just an air cooled due in a way loose mood".He called me a short while back just to tell me how proud he was of me and that he was happy of the good man and father I had become.Thanks to his caring ,friendship and the mens weekend he sent me to that had changed his life so much I was able to get there.I loved Bob very much and will miss him dearly.My deepest sympathy to his family.

Bob....you were one of those people who was so worth knowing. The only video I have of my teens when they were babies was taken by you and I watch and cherish it till this day. I remember having a meltdown when the tow guy put regular gas in my diesel engine on the Rabbit and you took care of that guy and my car...you were priceless! When we lived next door to you, Karen and the kids. I could not have asked for a better neighbor and friend. You were always ready for the next big adventure, swings, boat rides, hugs and advice all there for all comers. Please don't rest in peace Bob. Please bring as much energy, zest and opinions to the next place...shake it up my friend. Karen, Sam, Chris and Julia, You all have what it takes, my heart is with you during this time. Bob was like a brother to me. I had known him personally since the late 80's and was lucky enough to live nearby enough to see him often. Losing him so soon has really made me slow down and think what he meant to me.
The number of people that Bob unselfishly helped while he was with us is unfathomable. I know his legacy of kindness, dedication to making things right, and true friendship will live on through everyone who knew him.

The VW world has truly lost an icon and a friend. Bob was a remarkable individual, a class act and a gentleman in every sense of the word.
I'd like to imagine that right now he's in the heavenly VW garage exchanging tips and stories with John Muir.

After reading so many tributes to Bob I consider myself as so lucky because I have known Bob since I was 15. We all grew up together, and there are so many memories I wouldn't know where to start. Bob or Boobie as he was known to me was a champion friend. He never forgot the old gang ( you know who you are) and kept in touch with each and everyone of us of over the years. He was a true friend and a devoted husband and father. I will miss him and our conversations so very deeply. Bob was just Bob, open, honest, kind, and one of a kind. I met Bob in person back in 2002; I was glad that he was able to take time out of a busy day moving to a new house/shop location to meet a VW bus owner in town on business. We talked buses and aircooled engines for an hour before I had to go catch a plane. He was very knowledgeable and never hesitated to help spread that knowledge online or in person. He will be greatly missed by the VW community.

Please allow me to express my condolences over your loss. I never knew Bob, but his kindness and caring for other people became legendary over the years. I know that Bob is at peace now, and I wish the same for the Donalds family.
