EASTHAM — Donald Everett Smith, 87 years old, of Eastham, died July 12, 2008, in Chatham.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Enis G. Smith of Eastham.

Born on June 23, 1921, in the Bronx, N.Y., he graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1939 and attended the school of modern photography in New York City before being inducting into the Army and serving his country in World War II. Donald was an aerial photographer in the Army Air Forces, attending the advanced school of photography. During his years as an aerial photographer in the service, he was responsible for developing and printing photographs, which were later used for maps. While in the Army, he was decorated with the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.

Once Donald left the service, he was employed by the New York Edison Co., the New York Telephone Co. and Corn Exchange Bank, developing film, printing and enlarging negatives, retouching negatives and copying pictures and documents. He eventually took a job with the New York Telephone Company and worked with them for 35 years.

Donald lived in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., for 30 years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 1154, located in Yorktown Heights. Donald loved music, particularly opera. He held seasons tickets to the New York opera for 15 years, often traveling from his home on the Cape to New York to spend a weekend so he could attend a particularly favored opera. He also loved to garden and he planted an apple orchard, grape arbor and grew many vegetables and fruits while he lived in New York.

Donald retired in 1984 and initially spent his time between Venice, Fla., and Eastham, before finally settling on Cape Cod in 2002. While living on the Cape permanently, Donald loved to attend the Opera New England of Cape Cod and the Cape Cod Symphony.

During retirement, he loved to travel with his family and went on many European vacations with his daughter and granddaughter.

Donald was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans.

He is survived by two sons, David and Donald S. Smith; a daughter, Babbette Freeman; and six grandchildren, Jason Smith, Kimberly Smith, John Freeman, Julia Freeman, Allison Smith and Kelly Smith; and a great-grandchild, Brandon Smith.

His visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at 11 a.m., in the Church of the Holy Spirit, 204 Monument Road, Orleans, followed by his funeral service at noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Health Ministry, Church of the Holy Spirit, 204 Monument Road, Orleans, MA 02653.
