MARSTONS MILLS —

Dr. Casper W. Hill, 88, of Marstons Mills, passed away July 20, 2008, after a long battle with heart disease.

Born on Oct. 4, 1919, in Elizabeth City, N.C., to the late Stewart and Mattie (Harvey) Hill, he was one of seven siblings. He was a loving brother, husband, father and dedicated grandfather. He was selfless and always put others first.

He was a man of exceptional intelligence who was accepted to Shaw University at age 15 and earned his bachelor's degree in science in 1939. He then enlisted in the Army and served from 1941 to 1945 in Africa and Italy during which he married his late wife, Odessa (Wilson) Hill, in 1942.

Upon his return from his tour of duty, he worked as a public school math and science teacher from 1946-1965, initially in Elizabeth City before relocating to New Jersey's Dwight Morrow High School. Eventually, he became the science coordinator for the Englewood, N.J., public school system and also served as administrator for Curriculum and Instruction. He earned his master's degree in microbiology from North Carolina College in 1950 and Ph.D. in biology from New York University in 1963. He completed his teaching career in 1974 after a one-year teaching fellowship at Harvard University, Department of Education.

After retiring in Marstons Mills in 1978, he began his final position as assistant director of Personnel and director of Affirmative Action at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, where he worked to increase employment opportunities for minorities and the handicapped.

He is survived by a daughter, April T. Nottingham; and two granddaughters, Naomi and Fatima Nottingham.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at 1 p.m., in the Unitarian Church of Barnstable, Main Street (Route 6A), West Barnstable.

My condolences to Dr. Hill's family on his death. I was one of his students at Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, NJ in the late 1950's. I became a science major in college because of his wonderful teaching and his excitement about all the sciences, not just chemistry.
He will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched.

I wa deeply saddened to learn of thr passing of Dr. Hill. He was the finest most inspirational teacher I ever had at DMHS. I knew noyhing of chemistry in HS ,and he inspired my confidence to learn and enjoy the science. I'll be eternally grateful to him for making our classes the highlight of my higher education experience. It was a pleasure to know him.

So sorry to hear of Dr. Hill’s passing. My sincerest condolences to his family. Though you do not know me, I met Dr. Hill while working in the Community Affairs office at Cape Cod Hospital in the early 80s. I looked forward to his visits to the office to see my boss, and our mutual friend, Ann Williams, who was the Director of Community Affairs. He was always pleasant, and always offered a warm and friendly smile. May he rest peacefully in the arms of his Creator. Janet Farrell, formerly of Hyannis MA, and currently residing in Ft. Myers FL
