David R. Alvarez

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. — David R. Alvarez of Middletown died at his home on Wednesday, July 23, 2008. He was 58.

He was the son of the late Ruth (Thompson) Costello and J. William Costello of Orleans.

He spent his younger years enjoying surfing with his friends at Nauset Beach, and attended the Federated Church Youth Program.

David was a member of the Armed Forces, and served two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter crew chief and door gunner in Da Nang and Chu Lai.

He returned to Orleans, where he started Bubba's Steam Cleaning. He played on the Rags & Roses Softball Team. Later, David went on to open Games People Play, so kids and bicyclists had a place to meet.

David loved bicycles. He was one of the original riders in the Pan-Mass Challenge, as well as other charitable rides. David was always building and fixing bicycles for the young children.

He moved to Middletown, where he married and drove a school bus for Mid City Transit for several years. He also worked in property management and volunteered in his spare time at the Fair Oaks Animal Shelter.

David was a loving son and brother, and a devoted husband and stepfather. A good friend to many, he will be sadly missed by those whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his brother, Jay Costello of Michigan, Bridget Alvarez/Jacques, a stepson, Ryan Judson, and stepdaughter, Shannan Stanley, all of Florida; his aunt and uncle, Lois and Bill Hayes of Eastham; several nieces and cousins; and his many, many friends.

A graveside service will be held at Orleans Cemetery on Sunday, Aug. 10, at 11 a.m. Family and friends alike are invited.
