Elizabeth Paget Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2008.
BREWSTER — Elizabeth Joan "Betty" (Farrell) Paget, of South Orleans, died peacefully on Aug. 7, 2008, after a brief illness.

She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. John F. Paget for 60 years.

Born in Boston, on April 12, 1916, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Molly) Farrell of Brighton. She was a graduate of Regis College in Weston.

After college, during World War II, she worked for several years for Lever Brothers in Boston. Post war brought marriage and travel — first to Miami, Fla., where Betty became an important part of the Peck & Peck New York-based retailer of private label women's wear. She transferred with Peck & Peck, first to Chicago and then to Boston.

Betty made her life around her family — her husband John and their eight children. Babies started first in 1948 and continued on through 1962. Homes were first in Chicago, then Boston, Westport and Fairfield, Conn., and finally to Orleans in 1971.

Betty loved her life on Cape Cod, continuing her favorite activity of "mothering" with the gift of her 10 most beloved grandchildren.

She was very involved with all of the school systems in which her children and grandchildren attended; she was on the board of directors at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn., president of the Mother's Clubs at Laycock Country Day School in Greens Farms, Conn., Fairfield Country Day School in Fairfield, Conn., and at St. John's Prep in Danvers. The Nauset Regional School system provided the opportunity for her, as both mother and grandmother, to be the ultimate field trip chaperone — literally spanning decades!

She leaves a sister, Ann Kimball, and her husband, Charlie, of Wellesley; a son, Jack, and his wife, Mechi, of Davie, Fla.; six daughters, Betsy Matson and her husband, Jim, of Desert Hot Springs, Calif., Molly of Orleans, Kitty of Orleans, Therese Holland and her husband, David, of Orleans, Nancy and Julie, both of Hyannis; and daughter-in-law, Sandra Paget, of Yarmouthport; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several very special nieces and nephews; and her two most beloved toy poodles, Charlie Brown and Red Dandy.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, Aug. 10, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Nickerson Funeral Home, on Eldredge Park Way, in Orleans. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joan of Arc Parish in Orleans on Monday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Orleans Cemetery, on Tonset Road, in Orleans.

Donations may be made in the name of Elizabeth Farrell Paget, Class of 1938, to Regis College, 235 Wellesley St., Box 30, Weston, MA 02493.

If all of us could live our lives by the example that Betty Paget set, what a wonderful world this would be. Making family her priority, enjoying her friends and family to the fullest each and every day, seeking and finding humor, loving to laugh and making others laugh, unknowingly making every person she came in contact with feel important and heard. Mrs. Paget was genuine through and through and how blessed we are that she touched our lives.
To her daughters, son, grandchildren and especially my dear friend, Therese...she lives on through you.

I am sorry to hear of your mothers passing. As weird as it may seem, when I read the name i remembered your family and recognized your mother's photo. I think your family lived on prospect road. My family lived on Budner lane near the Greens farms end of prospect. I went to school with Betsey and my sister Suzanne was Jack's age. Suzanne and I both live on cape, I have been here about about 30 years.
