Donald Levasseur Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 5, 2008.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Donald Levasseur, age 69, devoted husband of 44 years to Ann Liimatainen Levasseur, of Fairfield, passed away on Sept. 1, 2008, in Yale New Haven Hospital.

Don was the proud and loving father to Donald K. Levasseur and his wife, Michele, and Brian Levasseur and his wife, Kelly, all of Stratford. Affectionately known to his five grandchildren as "Bampie," he cherished the time he spent with Amber, Autumn, Austin, Cody, and Britney.

Born and raised in New Bedford, Mass., Don moved to Fairfield in 1964. Before going to work for the Town of Fairfield, he served in the Army for several years between the Korean and Vietnam wars.

While employed with the Fairfield Department of Public Works, Don had been a mechanic and heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1995 with 26 years of dedication to his job. In 1992, he was recognized by the Fairfield Fire Department for his part in evacuating beach residents caught in a winter storm flood.

Donald had a passion for saltwater, never wanting to be too far away from the sound, and preferably fishing on it. He docked his trusty boat, "Sweeper," in Fairfield Marina, and held the unofficial title of "first in and last out."

Don was a member of the Fairfield and Bridgeport Boat Owners Associations, and Fayerweather Yacht Club, often helping organize the Inter-Club Bluefish Tournament. In addition to his sons and grandchildren, Don enjoyed sharing his fishing skills with inner city children as a volunteer for a mentoring program.

While his sons were growing up, he happily involved himself as a coach in the Fairfield Little League, and was a leader for the We-Belows and Boy Scout troops at First Church.

A celebration of Donald's life will be held on Friday, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. David Spollett officiating in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center. (Please enter using the Brick Walk or Patriot Plaza driveways). Friends may greet his family from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Yale Cancer Clinic, 333 Cedar Street, P.O. Box 208028, New Haven, CT 06520.

Brian, Kelly, Brit and Cody,
Your Dad, Grandfather was a good guy. He'd love to sit and greet everyone at DD, he is one of the most friendly people I've ever met. A man who adores his family, loves being outdoors on the boat and oh yeah don't forget fishing...he taught DJ a lot about that. I understand how u are feeling, losing someone you love is heartbreaking. Hopefully the memories that you have will sustain you through this most difficult time. May God's peace be with you. All my Love, Moo
