ORLEANS — Pearl Ellis, of Orleans, passed peacefully at home on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2008, at the age of 87.

She was the beloved wife of Leighton Ellis, also of Orleans, for 66 years.

Pearl taught at Orleans Elementary School for 36 years and was the school's principal for one year. After retiring in 1983, she and her husband traveled the country in their motor home.

Pearl enjoyed reading, music, and crossword puzzles. Her happiest times were with her family and she delighted in visits from her great-grandsons.

In addition to her husband, Pearl is survived by a daughter, Olive Jean Murphy and her husband John F. Murphy; three grandsons, John Jr., Trevor, and Dillon Murphy; and two great-grandsons, William and Dillon Murphy Jr., all of Orleans. She is predeceased by her son, Lawrence, and is survived by his daughter, Laura Ellis.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Orleans Elementary School, 46 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA 02653.

Olive Jean,

To the Ellis/Murphy Families,
It was with deep saddness that I read of the loss of your mother today. Pearl certainly retains a special place in my heart as a favorite teacher to my children.
She did so much for so many and will
live on in Orleans Elementary School history. You remain in my thoughts and my prayers.
