Richard Appleton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2008.
SOUTH YARMOUTH — Richard Felton Appleton, 82, of South Yarmouth passed away at home on Sept. 20, 2008, surrounded by his daughters.

He was the beloved husband of the late Ruth T. (Aylmer) Appleton, whom he married in 1952. They had been married 52 years when she passed away in 2004. He was the loving father of Deborah A. Appleton of South Yarmouth, Elizabeth J. Appleton of West Dennis and the late Robert M. Appleton, who passed away in 1986.

Dick was born in Newton and raised and educated in Westport, Conn. Following high school, he entered the Navy and served aboard the USS Garrard during World War II. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., and the Progressive School of Photography in New Haven, Conn., before moving to Cape Cod and joining his family's business, Appleton Hardware in Dennisport in 1952. In 1956, he became district executive for the Cape Cod Council of Boy Scouts and was responsible for the Lower Cape from Dennis to Provincetown and Nantucket. He also served as summer camp director at Camp Greenough in Yarmouthport for several summers.

In 1959, he moved to Norwich, Conn., and was director of scouting in Norwich and was camp director at Camp Quinebaug. He was also director of alumni at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before returning to Cape Cod in 1969. He has worked for Mid-Cape Home Centers for the last 35 years until his recent illness. During his years on Cape Cod, he also worked as a videographer chronicling many weddings and other celebrations.

Dick volunteered at C3TV and was active in organizing Navy reunions of the crew of the USS Garrard. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Yarmouth from 1989 to the present and was active in their many local and world projects.

In addition to his daughters, he is also survived by two grandchildren, Jesse Appleton and Nicole Norman of California; a great-granddaughter, Skyla Appleton; and his friend, Ralph Frazier, whom he took home from work every night for many years. He was predeceased by his brother, Arthur Appleton, and his sisters, Jane Bond and Ann Anderson.

Dick was loved by many for his generous spirit, his loving ways, his willingness to help always and his wonderful sense of humor.

A funeral will be held at noon on Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth. Friends and relatives are invited to call on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dick's name may be made to the Rotary Club of Yarmouth, Good Works Fund, P.O. Box 448, South Yarmouth, MA 02664.

I first met Dick Appleton at the 2004 U.S.S. Garrard reunion in Missouri. He was so warm and welcoming--such a gentleman.

My father had been his "skipper" aboard the Garrard in 1945. Like so many other servicemen, my father never spoke much about his experiences during the war. There were lots of tales to be told about his months in the Pacific, and Dick eagerly related a wealth of stories and information about my father's trials and triumphs.

At a subsequent runion my husband met Dick and so enjoyed getting to know him. Our foremost memory is of course his big smile, soft chuckle, and the twinkle in his eye. As we read through the enteries in this Guest Book, we found all the words and phrases that also came to our minds. Intelligent, generous, humorous, kind and considerate, always positive were all there--and more. Dick will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Ed and I extend our deepest sympathy to Dick's family of whom he always spoke so warmly. Our thought are with them all.

We will be at the reunion in San Diego; and, yes, Dick will be there with us--in our hearts.

Dick was a very special man. He worked very hard to make the reunions a success and put together a wonderful website for all to enjoy. My grandson has followed the website regularly so as not to miss any new additions. I was saddened to hear of Dick's passing. He will be missed by all. My husband Ray, one of Dick's shipmates on the Garrard, passed away in June. Even though I will attend the 2008 reunion it will not be the same for me. My husband of 60 years treasured his years in the US Navy and his friendship with Dick and all the shipmates. I will miss him sharing this time with me. I will miss Dick's kind and friendly ways and his unforgettable accent and laugh. His absence will leave a big void in our get together. Let's all enjoy the time the rest of us have together and treasure the friendships and memories we share.

Having met Dick Appleton at a U.S.S. Garrard reunion in Lancaster, KY, I will never forget him.

His smile, his sense of humor, his generosity and his overall character has burned a lasting memory in the hearts of many Garrard County residents.

I, so, looked forward to seeing Mr. Appleton at the U.S.S. Garrard Reunions. You couldn't help but love this man as he brought laughter and shared his gentle spirit to everyone he encountered. I can hear his chuckle as he shared his many stories that brought split gutting laughter to those around him. Oh, how he will be missed.

My sympathy to the family during this difficult time. May you hold on to the lasting memories and bask in the love that Dick Appleton radiated to everyone he met.

Although he will not be in San Diego, his spirit will be present. No one enjoyed the reunions any more than he. God has called home a precious spirit.

What a wonderful man!

When searching the internet for information about about the ship my father had commanded, I was given Dick's email address and told to contact him, since he was the man with all the information about the ship. He gave me so much information, as well as a copy of his personal diary. He then contacted all the other crew members so that they could give us additional information about the ship and my father. It was Dick who persuaded us to go to our first USS Garrard reunion in September 2004. He was also the first member of the crew we met that year at the airport in Cincinnati, heading for Missouri.
We were so looking forward to seeing him in San Diego.
He became a member of our family and we'll hold him in our hearts always. He will be sorely missed by us and all that served with him.
Our sympathy to his daughters, and other family members, who he held so near and dear.

My husband and I both worked with Dick at Mid Cape Home Centers and he was such a joy to be around. His smile and laughter was enough to turn a bad day around and bring such warmth to your heart. He will be missed dearly. Our sympothy to his family.

Dear Betsy and Debby. In 1961 I was 16 years old and had a job that summer at Appleton's Hardware. Your dad was a great guy that taught me a lot and made me laugh.
My heart and prayers are both remembering you and wish you peace and love.

I will always remember him from my son's wedding to Jayne Packer and the wonderful video he produced of their wedding. Richard must have stayed up most of the night of the wedding to produce the video(complete with music) which he gave to each of the parents the morning after the wedding. He seemed like a very pleasant and gentle man. I am sorry to learn of his passing. I was also surprised to learn that he too was a graduate of RPI - I was in the class of '59.

I did not know Dick while aboard the USS GARRARD but I did get to know him at our reunions, and I am glad that he helped make the plans for our reunions. Dick was a wonderful shipmate and he will be greatly missed at all of our future reunions. May God help Dick's family through these trying times and console them in their grief.

Dick will be sadly missed at our reunion in October in San Deigo - what an inspiration he has been to both of us. We admired his intelligence, his wit, and his friendship. His ability to inspire an entire room of shipmates was astounding! We loved Dick and we will miss him.

My condolences to the family of Dick Appleton.

My name is Candace (Quimby) Bach and I knew Dick through my father William Quimby. He and Dick were friends and shipmates on the Garrard during WWII.

They resumed their friendship while working together on the first annual Gerrard reunion in 2001. My Mom and Dad enjoyed Dick's company so much, they will miss him greatly.

I met Dick a few years ago during his visit with my dad, at my home in Sandwich. I remember listening to the two of them tell stories of the war, not of battles, no; their stories were about small moments in time when two kids, in the midst of a terribly frightening war, could actually be kids. They focused on the positive moments.

I guess that sums up my impression of Dick, he seemed to be a very positive, upbeat man. Although I didn't know him well, he made a wonderful impression on me, a very positive impression.

Dick was a lovely man, funny, smart, very kind and a fine gentleman.

May he rest in peace.
