Stanley Cook Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 1, 2008.
PETALUMA, Calif. — Stanley Edward Cook passed away peacefully at home in Petaluma, after a brief illness, on Oct. 17, 2008, at 90 years of age. His family was with him as he "Crossed the Bar."

Born on Jan. 14, 1918, in Brockton, Mass., Stanley spent his boyhood in Arlington, Mass., before moving to Pocasset at the age of 13. He married his high school sweetheart, Louise Barlow, in 1942. They resided in the "Red House" on Barlows Landing Road, Pocasset, and brought up their four children.

Upon retirement from the Civil Service in 1982, Stanley and Louise moved to Nice, Calif., and built a house on a hill overlooking Clear Lake. In 1998, they moved to Petaluma to be closer to their children. During their time in Nice, they enjoyed traveling around the country and Canada in a small camping trailer. They also traveled to Hawaii and Mexico.

A World War II Army veteran, Stanley served in the Pacific theater. He was a licensed plumbing and heating mechanic for 40 years; was devoted to his family and worked tirelessly as a volunteer for his church and community, always taking time to help someone in need.

Stanley was a volunteer fireman, a member of the Buzzards Bay Power Squadron, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

At the age of 80, he taught himself how to use the computer and created and edited the "River City Log," the newsletter of the Petaluma division of the auxiliary for eight years. He also belonged to the Masons.

Stanley was a sailing enthusiast, sailing the Sea Witch, first on Buzzards Bay and then on Clear Lake.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, R. Louise Cook; four children, Patricia L. Blumin, Rakhi (Dorothy) Cook, Diane Yogavati Cook, and Stanley E. Cook, Jr.; son-in-law, Leonard Blumin; daughter-in-law, Kathy Cook; two granddaughters, Kali (Marlo) Clark and Christine and husband Mark Desautels; two great-granddaughters, Maddy and Mia; a sister-in-law, Dorothy (Barlow) Washburn; a brother-in-law, Franklin "Bucky" Barlow; five nieces, two nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice, but Stanley would prefer to be remembered by lending a hand or saying a kind word to someone who needs you.

It is 1 year ago that you sailed away from this world to a safe harbor further on. We keep your memory alive by talking about you and sending you our loving thoughts. Mom is still waiting to join you;we take good care of her for you, Dad.

Memories of Dad come flooding to mind, now that his spirit is eternally sailing: making snowmen, going ice skating down at the swamp behind our property, playing softball in the backyard, rowing over to Bassett’s Island, going on the Swan Boats in Boston Public Garden in spring; riding the Edaville Railroad at Christmas, reading bedtime stories, piggy back rides, sailing on the Sea Witch. My heart is full of all of these rich memories. I am also deeply grateful that Dad transmitted to us the important values of life – honesty, fairness, and helping someone in need. I can never thank you enough, Dad, for all you have done for me.

With deep love,
Your daughter, Patti

Stanley was my Dad and I lived with him the past 10 years. He had a good life and he had a good passiing. When he realized that his body would not allow him his dream of living to be 100, he gracefully let go and passed to Fiddlers Green with a smile. He wanted all to know he had a great life and looks forward to being with his loved ones again someday. You are missed Dad
