SANDWICH — Richard D. Friend, formerly of North Attleboro, passed away on Oct. 29, 2008, in the Mary McCarthy Hospice House, Sandwich.

Born in London, England, on March 16, 1939, he was the son of the late Dr. Dale and Harriet (Coady) Friend.

Richard was a graduate of Moses Brown School and Brown University. He worked years ago at Cumberland Medical Laboratories with his father on early tranquilizer research. After Dr. Friend's retirement, Richard worked as chief purchasing officer at Poly Metallurgical Corp., a division of Stearn Leach, now Cookson America, a position from which he retired in 2001.

Richard had many interests including military history, nautical and naval history, medieval history, railroads, and foreign travel. He was able to speak several languages, but was extremely proud of his self-taught ability to speak Russian.

He had many friends at the former Chinatown Restaurant in North Attleboro, where he was known both as a gentleman and a generous tipper.

Richard is survived by a son, Carl and his wife Diana Friend of West Boylston; two sisters, Judith Friend of North Attleboro, and Elizabeth Friend and her husband James Coogan of Sandwich. He was also survived by two nieces, a nephew, five grandnieces, and a grandnephew.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Saturday (today), Nov. 1, 2008, from 4 to 8 p.m., in the John J. Diamond Funeral Home, 180 N. Washington St., North Attleboro. Burial will be private in Fairview Cemetery, Dalton.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601, or to Town of North Attleboro, Attn: Animal Shelter, 43 S. Washington St., North Attleboro, MA 02760.
