Harrison Reed Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 1, 2008.
SAGAMORE BEACH — Harrison E. Reed passed away on Oct. 31, 2008, after a battle with prostrate cancer.

Mr. Reed was born in Brockton on July 27, 1912, the son of the late Fred S. and Helen Schneider Reed. He spent his early childhood years in Plymouth, returning to Brockton in 1924. Mr. Reed graduated from Brockton High School in 1931 and briefly attended technical school before being employed as a machinist at Independent Nail Co. in Bridgewater.

An avid, lifelong fisherman, he was a member of the AB-A-DA-BA Surf Club. He was a champion surf caster, winning many ribbons and competitions.

On Aug. 15, 1942, he married the girl next door, Irene E. Anderson of Brockton. Shortly after returning from a brief honeymoon, Mr. Reed received word that his vital industry deferment was cancelled and he reported for induction to the Army at Fort Devens on Sept. 1, 1942. Mr. Reed completed his basic training and then received advanced training in arms repair. Mrs. Reed joined him at training sites in Michigan, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas, until he was deployed for Europe on Jan. 1, 1943. He served with the 15th Army Air Corps in Italy until victory was achieved, and he returned to Brockton in December 1945. He returned to Independent Nail as a nail cutter and retired from the company in 1974.

In 1949, Mr. and Mrs. Reed moved to Bridgewater. The family was active in the church life of Gammons Memorial United Methodist Church, where Mr. Reed served as a church trustee and sang in the choir. He and his wife were members of the Sumas Amice, the church couples group and worked at many church fairs. The family spent 35 years camping at Peter's Pond Park in Sandwich. In 1978, Mr. and Mrs. Reed moved to Wareham, and in 2005, to their daughter's home in Sagamore Beach.

Mr. Reed is survived by his daughters, Susan King of Sagamore Beach, and Marilyn Brown and her husband Andrew of Townsend. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Catherine Cole Reed of Williamsburg, Va.; and grandchildren, Leisa Waite of Portland, Ore., and Matthew H. Reed and Caroline E. Reed of Williamsburg, Va. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Irene, who passed away in July, and his son, Harrison E. Reed Jr. His brother, Clinton, and sister, Shirley Reed Briggs, also predeceased him.

A memorial service will be held at the Bridgewater Methodist Church on Monday, Nov. 3, at 10:30 a.m., followed by burial in the family plot at Vine Hills Cemetery in Plymouth.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth to honor the nursing staff of 2EastB.
