NORTH FALMOUTH — John R. Kirby, 80, of North Falmouth, died at Falmouth Hospital on Nov. 2, 2008.

He was the husband of Elaine D. (Ambrifi) Kirby.

After serving in the Army during World War II, he moved to Washington, D.C., and worked as a cartographic technician in the geological survey of the Department of the Interior. While in Washington, he met his wife, and they moved to Falmouth in 1978, when he was transferred to the Woods Hole branch.

He loved to study all maps and enjoyed spending time at both Old Orchard Beach in Maine and Old Silver Beach.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, John R. Kirby III of Arlington, Va., James Kirby of Severn, Md., and Jean Kirby of Wareham; one grandson, Jamie; and siblings, Robert Kirby of Auburn, Patricia Lesneski of South Portland, Maine, and Barbara Rafferty of Concord, N.H.

Visiting hours will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 584 W. Falmouth Highway (Route 28A), West Falmouth, followed by a noon funeral Mass at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 481 Quaker Road, North Falmouth. Burial will be at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St, Framingham, MA 01701.
