Winthrop Carlson Obituary

HARWICH - Winthrop S. Carlson, died peacefully, Sept. 30, 2007, at his home with his family, after a long illness.

He was born Oct. 22, 1927, in Providence R.I. He was the son of the late John Clarence Carlson and Marion Stone.

Winthrop attended the University of Rhode Island. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II, and graduated from Bryant University, Smithfield R.I., with BS in accounting.

He was business manager and comptroller at Emerson College, Boston, for 15 years.

Winthrop then became business manager at Fryeburg Academy, Fryeburg, Maine, until his retirement in 1991.

Mr. Carlson was treasurer of Thom Clinic for Children; board member of Robbins Institute for Speech Correction; board member of Society for Ministerial Relief; member of Family Service Association, National Association of Independent Schools; Lovell/Fryeburg Kiwanis Club, Pythagorean Lodge, AF&AM of Fryeburg and Society of Colonial Wars.

Winthrop is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Dib) Colwell, of 57 years; son, Ronald of China, Maine; daughter, Beth Breen and her husband Craig of Crestview, Fla.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Corey, Ashley and Callie Breen, and extended families; and great-grandchildren, Rylee and Tison Breen of Crestview, Fla., and Liara and Neliya Hinnard of Chattanooga, Tenn.

His interests were in music, sailing, skiing, golf, swimming and refurbishing homes.

Family and friends are welcome to a celebration of his life at his home on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, from 2 to 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Winthrop S. Carlson Memorial Fund, Alzheimer's Services, 712 Main Street, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Arrangements are by MacKinnon Funeral Home, Whitman.

Grammy, Mom and Uncle Ronnie,
I'm glad that I got to come visit this past week. I wish it was for different circumstances but I know that Grampy is in a better place and that we will all miss him and that we all love him. I hope to see you soon-

My heart goes out to you at this time. I was priveleged to have met Win and wish I had gotten to know him sooner. I believe he is an angel and will say hello to my nephew when he reaches heaven. Bless you all and I'll see you soon.
