Carl Zimmerman Obituary

WEST YARMOUTH — Carl P. Zimmerman, 95, of Cummaquid, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007, at Mayflower Nursing Home in West Yarmouth after a long illness.

He resided for several years at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Hank Casey. Mr. Zimmerman was the husband of the late Anna (Deerr) Zimmerman, who died in 2002. They had been married for 64 years.

Born in 1912, in LeRoy, N.Y., Mr. Zimmerman was the son of Karl and Rosalie Zimmerman. After graduating from Purdue University in 1934, where he met his wife, he moved to New York City. He spent the next 37 years working for American Electric Power Co. (AEP) as chief engineer, vice president and director of the AEP Service Corp. He was responsible for the engineering and construction of generating plants and transmission systems of 750 KV and lower voltage. He was a fellow of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers.

During World War II he served in the Army as a communications engineer. Mr. Zimmerman was honorably discharged with the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1953. He then returned to AEP until his retirement in 1971.

Mr. Zimmerman and his wife moved to western North Carolina, where they lived until 1987, when they moved to Dennis. Mr. Zimmerman enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, and was able to play well into his 90s. He was a daily communicant at Mass until his stroke in 2004. He was an avid Yankees fan.

Mr. Zimmerman is survived by a daughter, Lynn Casey and her husband Hank of Cummaquid; a son, Thomas Zimmerman and his wife Carol of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Catherine Lapp of LeRoy, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Maggie and Anna Casey, both of Boston, Maire Casey of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mike Casey of Cummaquid, Michael Zimmerman of Cary, N.C., and Cathy Zimmerman of Raleigh, N.C. He was predeceased by two brothers, Henry and Frank Zimmerman, both formerly of LeRoy, N.Y.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 22, in Sacred Heart Chapel, Summer Street, Yarmouthport. Interment will follow in Saint Francis Xavier Cemetery, Centerville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, 21 Cross St., Hyannis, MA 02601.
