Richard Smyth Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2007.
BREWSTER — Richard (Dick) Smyth died following complications from Alzheimer's.

He was born in Yonkers, N.Y., in 1927, the son of Arthur and Charlotte Smyth. He was a graduate of Gorton High School in Yonkers, N.Y., and Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y. He served in both the Navy and the Marine Corps. He was married for over 55 years to Anne Smyth, who predeceased him earlier this year.

He worked for over 20 years at Allstate Insurance Co. in and around the New York metro area as well as in Chicago, Ill. After retiring from Allstate, Dick went on to become vice president of Millers National Insurance Co. in Chicago. He and his wife, Anne, retired to Chatham over 20 years ago to fulfill their dream of living on the Cape.

Dick worked part time for several years as a tour guide at the now-defunct Fire Museum in Brewster (his father had been a fireman in New York). He was involved in the following organizations: the Chatham Men's Club, several men's golf clubs, and the Marine Corps League. He was active in his church, Holy Redeemer, where he and his wife, Anne, were ecumenical ministers. He was a former member of the Monomoy Yacht Club and the Hyannis Yacht Club. Along with his wife, Anne, he volunteered at the food pantry for several years.

Dick was passionate about wine, jazz, nature and animals. He had a great interest and knowledge of the history of the Civil War as well as World War II. He was a gifted amateur photographer and enjoyed taking pictures on the many trips he and his wife took in the U.S. and Europe.

He is survived by his three loving children, James Smyth of Chatham, Virginia Smyth of Chatham, and Christine Cornetta of Fishkill, N.Y. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Claire Kenny of Harwich; and his two granddaughters, Elisabeth Cornetta and Megan Smyth.

A time of remembrance will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007, at Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church, Highland Avenue, Chatham. A private burial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the following: Hospice of Epoch, Alzheimer's Association of Cape Cod, or Animal Rescue League, Brewster.
