Mac was on the Boy Scout Troop committee for 10 years and was a scout master for three years. He moved to Orleans in 1986. He was elected member of the Orleans board of selectmen for six years and served as chairman for two years. He was president of the Nauset Newcomers for several years, and was a past commodore of the Orleans Yacht Club, where he was an active member of the sailing fleet. He was also a member of the Ocean Edge Golf Club and enjoyed cruising and sailing on Pleasant Bay. He was a member of the Orleans coffee club and the Church of the Holy Spirit in South Orleans.

He is survived by his sister, Carol Kirkwood Anderberg of Huntington, Ill.; and his sons, Maclean Kirkwood III and his wife Judy of West Chester, Penn., Attorney Christopher Kirkwood and his wife Laura of Middletown, N.J., and David Kirkwood and his wife Lisa of East Sandwich. He was predeceased by his son, John, in 1983. He is also survived by three stepchildren, Karen Ellen Pye of Knoxville, Tenn., Thomas Pye and his wife Susanna of South Orleans, and Andrew Pye and his wife Beth of Chester, Conn.; 13 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mac Kirkwood was a gentleman, a leader, a visionary, a dedicated father and husband. He was the real, genuine article.

Towhee Lane residents know well and appreciate the dedication and drive of Mac and Justine as a team.

Mac's earthly dues are paid in full, and he's on to his next horizon. Happily, Justine remains as our honored Towhee friend and dynamo.

Thanks you Mac, and Godspeed.

Please accept my condolences on Mac's passing. Orleans was a very lucky town to have had him as selectman during some tumultuous times, and not since has there been more kind, honest, thoughtful and gentlemanly influence in local government...
