FALMOUTH — Louise (Chapman) Whitehead, 96, formerly of Duxbury, died at Falmouth Hospital, on Nov. 18, 2007.

She was the wife of the late John Andrews Whitehead for over 50 years.

Mrs. Whitehead was born and raised in Westminster West, Vt. She attended a one-room schoolhouse for grades one-eight before graduating from Vermont Academy. Later she earned a teaching degree in music from Keene State Teachers College. Following teaching and principal positions in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, her husband was superintendent of schools in Duxbury, Canton, Swampscott, and Tuckahoe, N.Y. They maintained residence in Duxbury full- or part-time since 1945.

During retirement, Mrs. Whitehead wintered in Dundee, Fla., and summered in Duxbury, except for the past two years, when she resided in Heritage of Falmouth. She sang in numerous church choirs and stayed fit by swimming. While in Eastchester, N.Y., she was very active with the League of Women Voters, and in Duxbury, she volunteered at the Duxbury Thrift Shop.

She is survived by a son, John A. (Jack) Whitehead of Falmouth; two daughters, Judith Gough of Charlton, N.Y., and Elaine Dobrydnio of Eastchester, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m., in the Pilgrim Church of Duxbury, 404 Washington St., Duxbury, MA 02332.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church at the above address or to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in Falmouth.
