Jerry Malafronte Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 10, 2007.
CHATHAM — Jerry J. Malafronte, 92, entered into rest on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, at Liberty Commons Health Care Center with his loving family by his side.

He was a devoted husband to Mary V. Antonacci Malafronte for 53 years, until her death in 2003. He was born in Derby, Conn., on Nov. 12, 1915, son of the late Antonio and Mary Maturo Malafronte, and was a resident of Derby for 20 years and Huntington, Conn., for 32 years before moving to be with his daughter and her family in Harwich.

At age 15, Jerry entered into the family business, Tony's Service Station, in Derby, which he subsequently owned and operated with his brother Anthony "Red" until his retirement. He loved his family, who will miss his sage and sound paternal advice.

He enjoyed musical entertainment of all kinds and had a passion for ballroom dancing, which he did with his wife and circle of friends every Saturday night. They were members of the Derby and Shelton Senior Centers. Jerry is a former member of the Derby Elks Club, and a former communicant at St. Mary Church in Derby and St. Lawrence Church in Huntington.

In his younger days, he was a member of the Turner Club and became quite a gymnast. He also was a long-distance swimmer and completed a cross-harbor swim in Long Island Sound.

He is the beloved father of Mary Lu Ploski and her husband, Franklin A., of Harwich; loving grandfather of Rebecca Bellemare and her husband, Timothy, of Cromwell, and Michael Ploski of Harwich. He is survived by his brothers, Ernest Malafronte of Largo, Fla., and Anthony "Red" Malafronte of Shelton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant son, Gerard.

Friends may call on Tuesday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth St., Derby, Conn. His funeral will leave the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. in St. Mary Church, Derby. Burial will follow in Mount St. Peter Cemetery, Derby.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or the American Red Cross.
