Yvonne Tucker Obituary

Yvonne
Grant Baker Tucker
'Von'
Mrs. Tucker was taken by God in a mighty swift moment on Saturday, January 10, 2009 after a wonderful day spent with her daughter and son-in-law, with whom she had lived the past two and one half years.
She was Mom to Donna Baker of Charlotte (husband Alvin Johnson), Dane Baker (wife Renee) and Devin Baker of Walkertown, NC. She had two granddaughters and 3 great grandchildren. Von was the oldest sister of Becky Grant Hunter of Mooresville, Wanda Grant Harris of Wilmington and her 'adopted' sister Mary Linville, of Mooresville. Her father, Roy 'Whitey' Grant, whom she lovingly had cared for at Wilora Lake Lodge, will miss her. Her mother, Pauline Grant, welcomed her into heaven.
Von was kind, generous, and brave. Facing breast cancer, she never asked 'why me?' She was proud to be a Breast Cancer Survivor and relished life, which made her sudden departure that afternoon all the more poignant.
Von had a zest for life, travel and people. After retirement, she merrily visited, RV style, every state save Hawaii (alas, no road to get there) with her late husband Hal Tucker, making friends all along the way.
She had a hug and encouraging word for everyone she met and laughed with an abandon that lightened the hearts of all who heard her. Her congeniality warmed the hearts of her fellow '56 Central High classmates. They celebrated their 70th birthdays together last year. She cherished her Wilora Lake family and greeted everyone there with a 'cheerful heart, as unto the Lord'.
Nothing made her happier than a day of sun, dirt under her nails, trimming a shrub or inspecting a ripe tomato - knowing that she'd be able to cook, can and share. She took simple pleasure in gardening, music, crossword puzzles, raising her family on 'meatball stew,' telling stories in true southern style, and visiting her new friend Nancy and the poodles, whom she had adopted.
We will miss her in our homes and hearts. She is in every room of Donna and Alvin's home and people on the street will look for her bending down to pull a weed, kiss a flower, or retrieve a neighbor's recycle bin from the curb.
She was a beautiful soul that heaven could no longer do without, but her keen humor, sharp mind, bright smile, and sparkling eyes will forever remain in the memory of all who knew her.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 1:45 p.m. Saturday, January 17 at Wilson Funeral & Cremation Service, 5301 Albemarle Road. Her memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Jeff Andler officiating. Interment will be private.
Memorials may be made to the Susan B. Komen Foundation or the Medic Benevolent Fund.

Yvonne could not have been kinder nor more helpful to my mother, whom she met at Wilora Lakes about 5 years ago!

My Mom often said, Yvonne was like a daughter to her...taking her places and helping with things my mother could no longer do.

I went to high school with Yvonne and wrote a short tribute to her on my website www.chs54.com

What a wonderful person she was!
