A graduate of Myers Park High School died Sunday after falling off an overlook in Sewanee, Tenn., officials said.
Greer Yorke, a freshman at the University of Georgia, was visiting friends at the University of the South. They climbed up Morgan's Steep, a popular lookout spot at the edge of campus.
Police investigators said Yorke went to sit on the edge of the bluff when he fell. A friend who was with him called 911.
Officer J.E. Rollins of the Sewanee police department wrote in his report that Yorke fell 40 feet. “Mr. Yorke was unresponsive to verbal or pain stimuli,” Rollins wrote. “He had injuries to his head and leg.”
Yorke was airlifted to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, where he died Sunday night. The funeral will be in Charlotte on Thursday.
“The Sewanee community is deeply saddened by this tragic accident,” said University of the South Vice Chancellor Joel Cunningham. “Our sympathy and prayers are with Greer Yorke's family and friends, and with the University of Georgia community.”

I happened on this story of Greer and my heart was sick to read how he died. My heartfelt condolences goes out to you. I pray you will be comforted from the promises our Dear and Loving Heavely Father gives us in his word the Bible. He promises to resurrect our loved ones and then do away with the thing that causes us the most grief, death. (1 Corinthians 15:26) Then we will never have to experience the loss of a loved one.

A message of comfort and hope to the family,
I did not know Greer personally but it's easy to see from all of the heartfelt condolences that he touched the lives of many and will truly be missed by all who loved and cared about him. Psalms 121 is a very encouraging scriptural passage. There Our Heavenly Father assures us that He will be with you to see you through these difficult days. You are in my thought and prayers.

To the dear family and friends of Greer, I wish you comfort and strength during a time when you are in shock, disbelief, perhaps anger, and many other distressing feelings. I pray that you will endure these difficult times as you grieve. It brings me much hope to think of the wonderful promise of our Lord Jesus Christ to reunite us with our dead loved ones in the future here on earth under God's kingdom. Since that will be a time of no more suffering, wickedness, pain, violence, tears, sickness, and death, it will be more wonderful than we can imagine. I am confident that you also be there for each other in unity, love, and comfort.

Greer meant so much to so many people as I'm sure you know. He's always going to be in our minds and our hearts, his memory will never die as his spirit lives on. I never knew that this could happen or that this was possible. There are no words that will ease your anger or pain, except that He has a bigger and better plan than you could imagine and it won't be long until we can all celebrate Greer's life together. I love you and am always here for you!

I was sorry to read about Greer's death in the Winston-Salem Journal. I worked with John when he was an attorney at Integon Corporation. I remember how proud John was of his sons. I know you are very proud also of Greer's accomplishments in his short life and will have precious memories to help sustain you in this loss. I lost a daughter when she was almost 5 years old and can sympathize with you and your family in the loss of a child. May God give you extra grace, comfort and strength in the days that lie ahead. Mrs. Yorke,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Greer's accident. Many of my earliest memories as a child were with Greer hanging out after school at the house on Stanford or getting in trouble in Mrs. Barkley's class. We were best friends. When you guys moved it broke my heart, but I was so lucky to have the opportunity to reconnect with him in High School. He was truly a genuine and kind-hearted person and we will miss him so very much. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Yorke-
I worked with Greer at Brixx and always looked forward to his smiling face and his jokes. When he would come in to eat I was usually his waitress, and he would always order the create your own pizza that we both loved and would leave a piece for me to eat while I was working. Greer meant a lot to a lot of people and his legacy will live on. He touched everyone that he met and will be missed by many. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Your family is in our family's thoughts and prayers, and forever in our hearts. Our son Matt is a sophomore SAE at Georgia and was also on the Sewanee trip to visit friends last weekend. Matt spoke so highly of Greer and told us tonight of the many beautiful words that were spoken about him today and the hundreds of friends who were there to mourn the loss and celebrate the life of such a fine young man. May many happy memories help sustain you and may God bring your family abundant comfort and peace.

Paula...We are saddended to learn of the tragic loss of Greer. We recall the sweet memory of our visit with you and John at Presbyterian Hospital in the summer of 1989 to share the joy of Greer's birth with the two of you. Dear Paula and Spencer,
Banks and I are heartbroken for you both. We wish there was something we could do for you. We had just received a letter and personal note from Greer on Friday that mentioned that he was raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society an behalf of a fraternity brother and John. We were so happy to hear from him and giggled at his note about how much fun he was having at UGA...though he confessed to making a few trips back to Charlotte to have some Brixx pizza and see the Panthers. We wrote back to him about how proud his daddy would be of him... especially his efforts to help others.
We love you and will see you tomorrow night...Molly and Banks

Dear Paula and Spencer
I am so saddened to learn of Greer's tragic death. It seems like only a few years ago I recall his birth and then as cute little blond boy running around First Presbyterian in Lincolnton and at choir functions where family was involved. Our nature is to question they hows and whys of life, but it is important to remember that God's love transcends death. Greer will live on in our memories and in our hearts.

Dearest Paula and Spencer,
Words cannot describe the pain we felt when we heard of Greer's death. Our only comfort is knowing that he is with his father, whom he loved dearly and whom loved him dearly.
We will pray for you both, and your whole family at this difficult time.
Love,
Mary Beth, David, Grier and Freeman Paulson

Dear Paula and Spencer - our thoughts are with both of you. JR and Greer played football together and I still have their picture together in my office. Take care of each other.

I did not know Greer or the Yorke family, but as a Charlotte, NC native and graduate of the University of the South, I feel deeply connected to this tragedy. May God bless you and your family during this terrible time.

Paula,
Chuck and I hold you and Spencer in our thoughts and prayers. You are lucky that you had Greer as a son and I just pray that the great memories you all have will sustain you at this time and that God will wrap his arms around you and grant you peace. With love, Chuck and Debbie Uzzell

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I did not know Greer, but from reading the notes from friends/family, he sounded like a great, loving, caring, man. He is now with our Lord, and is looking over all of you. He will send you a 'sign' soon, that he is okay.
