Myers Park senior Cedric Jones smiled Tuesday as he hugged assistant principal Phylis Hampson and pinched her arm.
The moment was a reminder of the strides Jones had made, socially and academically, since entering Myers Park as a ninth-grader lagging behind other students.
By the next morning, the 18-year-old was dead of gunshots fired by a neighborhood friend during an argument that escalated out of control, police and neighbors say.
“He was working so hard to prepare himself for college,” said Myers Park principal Tom Spivey.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police charged Orlando Rogers, 19, with shooting Jones near the victim's home in Charlotte's Belmont neighborhood.
A neighbor said the argument was over a girl, according to the WCNC-TV, the Observer's news partner. But police haven't released a motive.
The neighborhood is one of Charlotte's more dangerous, according to local government statistics. The violent crime rate is nearly four times that of Charlotte as a whole, with a juvenile arrest rate nearly twice as high, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Neighborhood Quality of Life Index.
But Jones stood out to his neighbors as someone who stepped around the drug and crime issues that plague the neighborhood. He would eventually go to college, his neighbors and teachers had thought.
Mary Berryhill, who has lived next door to the Jones family for 10 years, said Jones and her son had been friends since elementary school.
“He was very intelligent. He was one of those high-IQ types,” she said of Jones. “The two earned honest money together by cutting grass and raking leaves in the neighborhood. He was about doing the right things in life.”
The shooting suspect was also a friend – part of an extended “old school” neighborhood where families help raise each other's children, Berryhill said. “Everybody is shaken. They all pretty much played together growing up.”
Jones attended McClintock Middle School. An Observer story from 2004 lists a Cedric Jones as McClintock's honoree in the Teen Role Model of the Year competition.
In high school, he would call friends who skipped school to bless them out and encourage them to return, Myers Park teacher Glenda McKinnon remembered.
She said Wednesday that one student she knows credits Jones with keeping him from dropping out.
Jones was working extra hours to take enough classes to become eligible to attend a four-year college. He needed some higher-level math and some other requirements, his teachers said.
He signed up to take classes at Hawthorne High, an alternative school for expectant mothers and older students trying to finish at odd hours. He was about to sign up for more classes given through the school online.
Said principal Spivey: “Cedric was true success story with a bright future.”
Staff researcher Marion Paynter and writer Cleve R. Wootson Jr. contributed.

My deepest sympathy. We are truly living in "critical times hard deal with..."-2Timothy 3:1-5. But we are not left without hope towards the ones we lose in death, John 5:28-29, and Acts 24:15. May these words prove to be of comfort to you. Pray for the strength to endure, and allow others to help.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort. God's Word also comforts us in the book of Revelation, chapter 21, verse 4, which says "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

Please accept my deep and heartfelt sympathy for your loss. There are no answers to such a senseless act toward this young man, who by all indications was moving forward with his life. May God grant you peace as we read at Philip. 4:7 "and the peace of God that excels all thought will guard your hearts and your mental powers by means of Christ Jesus." Remember that death leaves a heartache that no human can heal, but know that love leaves memories that no one can steal. Your familly, friends and community will be in my prayers.

It seems unfair to lose a loved one so senselessly at such a young age. I am truly sorry for your loss. He was definately on the move in a positive direction. I pray that Our Heavenly Father will grant you peace and help you to cope during this difficult time. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life’s routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. Psalms 121 is a very comforting scriptural passage. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

Cedric Jones, Boyfriend,Father,Son,Cousin,and
Dearest friend,
it is you we are here to commend, the thoughts we’ve expressed, the feelings we shared.
The comfort you gave to show you cared.
Your doors was always opened to us.
You stayed prepared for what ever our hearts had to discuss.
There are so many valued memories we will never forget. You made our hearts raise even at sunset.we know you are home with out a doubt.
We want to thank you ced for showing us what life is really about and not letting us give up.
Unselfish love, compassion and concern, that’s a beautiful crown you earned.
We will always embrass you ced, because you are that link to our hearts which will never be broken, your memory is embedded in our hearts as your token.
We will see you soon.

I WAS SAD TO HEAR MY SON SPEAK ABOUT A GOOD FRIEND OF HIS WHO UNFORTUNATELY LOST HIS LIFE SO SOON. HE DIDN'T SPEAK MUCH ABOUT THE SITUATION, BUT I SAW DEEP IN HIS SPIRITS THAT IT WAS A DEAR FRIEND, SO DEAR TO MY SON THAT HE ACKNOWLEDGED CED BY SIGNING, "R.I.P CED", ON HIS BASKETBALL SHOES DURING HIS GAMES AT MYERS PARK. THIS LETS ME KNOW THAT CED MUST OF BEEN A WONDERFUL PERSON, NOT ONLY TO MY SON, BUT TO MANY. TO THE FAMILY, STAY STRONG, I WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP YOU IN MY PRAYERS.

I did not know this gentleman personally but still the same a young loss of life is always a tragedy. To his family and friends he leaves behind, continue this legacy of goodness that he started. Young people go on to college and when you accept that degree look to heave and tell Cedric it was all for him. Come together and make sure that he lives on. I pray God will comfort you as only he can and that he will revive your spirts and renew your strength to carry on just as your dear friend Cedric would want you to do. He is always just a smile away. May God bless you and keep you.

So I'm sitting here at home just reading these entries, thinking about you and all the good times we had together. Ced You were one of the best friends I could ever have, and I miss you so much. There's a piece of my heart missing, and it seems as if its getting harder and harder for me to cope with each day. But I know your in a better place, watching over all of us. I know it and can feel it in my heart, I just wish you didn't have to go so soon, I cant stop the tears and cant stop thinking that this is all just a dream and how bad I want to wake up and none of this happen, but I know it won't. I just want you to know that you will be truly missed and I know Kyson will grow up to be just the man you were, with such care and compassion and will never forget you. I am praying everyday for your family, Ms.Beverly, Ike, and Chasney I know how hard it is right now, but we all know Ced would want us to be strong so keep your heads up and continue to cherish all the memories with your son/brother/boyfriend. I love you Ced with all my heart and cant wait for the day when we meet again.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Dearest Family,
My thoughts and prayers go out to you in this time of sorrow. As we celebrate Cedric's life I remember his days at McClintock Middle. Cedric would quickly wind his way down the hall, tap my shoulder, then claim his innocence when I called his name.
His sly, yet genuine smile is one that will be missed but not forgotten!

I am in awe of the response to Cedric's death. His friends, family, teammates and coaches have shown such love, care and concern for each other during this terrible time. To me, this speaks the loudest to the type of young man Cedric was.
"When you can do the common things of life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world." George Wasington Carver
"And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them." Romans 8:28

I only know Cedric from an e-mail about him that was sent by his basketball coach to friends at our job. Cedric sounds like he was a remarkable and amazing young man making strides in life and planning for a future with his son. He was trying to keep others on track to success and suddenly his life was stolen from him. He will be missed by many friends and family.

When I think of Cedric, I remember the inked praying hands on his shoulder, and the way he played in the paint:
CED
The call came in at supper
He was struggling for his life
His teammates rushed round
To help him win this fight
The doctors worked for hours
But his wounds they could not clear
They drew his family close
And said his time was near
For seven hours more
Still he battled on
Then left this world to all of us
When his maker called him home
Some say he's in a better place
That this was God's plan for him
But others will remember
Praying hands above the rim

Hey Ced,
Its your teammate here, and I know for certain that your playing a sick game of one on one with god right now. Give him the windmill... I know he'll be impressed. You were such a good teammate, friend, and father. Thanks for always putting a smile on my face, and I'll do my best to post-up down low.
with love, Big T
