BESSEMER CITY -- Mrs. Whitehurst, 84, passed away peacefully March 2, 2009 at the Robin Johnson House in Dallas.
A lifelong resident of the Long Creek community, she was born April 23, 1924 to the late John Abel and Sadie Boyd Ormand. She was a devoted wife and mother, and active in Long Creek Presbyterian Church all of her life, serving as an elder, historian and teacher. Lida was a graduate of NC Woman's College in Greensboro. She was a Girl Scout leader for 15 years, and her 3 sons became Eagle Scouts. Lida was a past president of the Bessemer City Woman's Club and was active in her community in a number of ways, including delivering Meals-On-Wheels. Preceding her in death were her husband, Joe R Whitehurst and her brother Lewis B. Ormand.
Lida is survived by son Bobby and wife Linda of Charlotte, daughter Nancy and husband Roger White of Warrenton, VA, sons Otis of Forest, MS, Rufus and wife Becki of Hampton, VA, daughter Sarah and husband Eddie Tate of Bessemer City; 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; and her brother, John and wife Jennie Delle Ormand, Jr. of Bessemer City.Visitation will be at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home in Bessemer City from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 4, 2009. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Long Creek Presbyterian Church, 701 Long Creek Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
