Marion Wood Obituary

Marion Eugene Wood, Jr.
'Gene'
Mr. Wood, a resident of The Carriage Club of Charlotte, NC died peacefully Saturday evening, February 28, at Carolina's Medical Center. A loving husband, devoted brother, dedicated father and a triple-proud grandfather, he was 87 years old.
Mr. Wood was born in Lafayette, GA, on May 19, 1921, the oldest child of the late Gene and Willie Taylor Wood. He moved as a child to Baxley, GA, where his father was an attorney and court reporter. After serving in the 830th Engineer Aviation Battalion during World War II, he returned home and attended North Georgia College before transferring to The Georgia Institute of Technology. He was a 1950 graduate of Georgia Tech with a degree in civil engineering and a 36-year member in the Georgia Tech 'Stinger Club.' Mr. Wood briefly worked with the North Carolina Highway Department following graduation before moving to Richmond, where he began a 32 year career with the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation. He eventually rose to become one of eight District Engineers in the department with responsibility for the 12 county Salem District in Western Virginia. He and his wife were also long time members of First Baptist Church in Roanoke, VA. Mr. Wood retired in 1984 and moved to Charlotte in 2007 in order to be closer to his son and triplet grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen Foster Wood, also a resident of The Carriage Club; son, Marion Eugene Wood III and his wife Allison, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Katharine Eleanor Wood, Mary Amelia Wood and Charles Alexander Wood, all of Charlotte; sister, Ollie Jo Levitt of Satellite Beach, FL; nephews, Kenneth 'Buddy' Levitt of Orlando, FL, William E. Levitt and John S. Levitt, both of Satellite Beach, FL; and grandnephew, John S. 'Jack' Levitt, also of Satellite Beach.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Harry & Bryant Company in Charlotte and Manry-Jordan Funeral home in Blakely, GA. Mr. Wood will be interred on Friday, March 6, at New Park Cemetery in Fort Gaines, GA following a 2:00 p.m. graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to either the American Heart Association or to the American Macular Degeneration Association.
