Wendell Chestnut, Sr.
NEW LONDON -- Mr. Chestnut, 78, of 323 S. Main Street, died Monday, March 2, 2009 at Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast, Concord. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 5th at First Baptist Church of New London, Inc., Rev. Otis Goins and Rev. Tim Swaringen officiating. Burial will be in the New London Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stanly Funeral Home where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the hour of the service.
Born October 11, 1930 in Horry County, SC, he was the son of the late Ollie Chestnut and Minnie Marie Sessions Chestnut. He graduated from Conway High School, earned a BS degree from Pfeiffer University, an MA degree from Appalachian State University and his Advanced Principal's Certificate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a retired employee of the Stanly County School System having served as Teacher and Assistant Principal at North Stanly, Principal of both Ridgecrest and New London Elementary Schools, and he helped direct Support Services at the Central Office.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of New London, Inc., where he was an active member, a former Deacon, and Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. He was also a veteran of the US Navy having served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Chestnut was a former Mayor of the Town of New London from 1977 until 1983.
He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Mary Jane Strider Chestnut of the home; son, Johnny Wendell Chestnut, Jr. and wife Elizabeth of New London, NC; daughter, Angela Chestnut Moore and husband David of New London, NC; sisters, Betty Barnhill of Conway, SC, Verna Jean Preston of Maryville, TN, and Anna Lee Causey of Summerville, NC; and grandchildren, Jeremy Chestnut, Leanna Chestnut, and Hayley Moore. He was preceded in death by his brother, Marion Harold Chestnut and a sister, Miriam Chestnut Martin.
Stanly Funeral Home of Albemarle is assisting the Chestnut Family.

I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. Mr. Chestnut was a wonderful teacher and principal. I will never forget his smile and his warmth. He always tried to guide you in the right direction, if you let him. Mrs. Chestnut thank you both so much for giving so much of yourselves to help make us who we are today.

I am a 1985 graduate of North Stanly and knew Mr. Chestnut when I was at New London Elementary. Aunt Margaret as everyone new her and Mr. Chestnut were great. We are sorry for your loss. He will be missed.

mr chesnut was great man i loved him sincei was 5 he wasa kind hearted man he always paid us children attention i remember my first day at new london i was so scared i got lost on the way back form lunch i didnt follow the line along comes this big man ask me whose classare you in i said mr s anderson he said come one grabbed my hand and took me to class i didnt get in trouble but i always knew he would be ther to take care of us students he will be greatly missed i hope that on day my daughter hasa principal as kind hearted and devoted to students like he was
