Arthur Whittington Obituary

Arthur D. Whittington
Mr. Whittington, 90 of Charlotte affectionately known to his friends as 'Art' and 'Whitt', died peacefully Monday evening, August 10, 2009, at Presbyterian Hospital-Main.
He was born April 29, 1919 in Durham, NC, son to the late Arthur D. and Kathleen Whittington. As a pharmaceutical salesman with Cutter Laboratories, he was recognized as a National Salesman of the Year on a number of occasions. The company awarded him with a number of trips, one which took him to Germany, behind the iron curtain where he had fought with General Patton's Third Army during World War II. Following his military commitment he continued his education, graduating from Duke University in 1947. He was a loyal supporter of his Blue Devils until his death. An active member of Myers Park Baptist Church since 1953, he was a dedicated member of the Fifth Dimension Sunday School class and a long-time usher at the church. Art was an avid golfer and one of the original members of Carmel Country Club. He with his wife enjoyed being keepers of the Mammoth Oaks Community Park for a number of years. His many volunteer activities included volunteering for the past 25 years at CMC-Main.
He was preceded in death by his son, Arthur Donnell 'Donn' Whittington in 1971 and out of love for their son, Art and Brownie were one of the founding parents of the Nevins Center, Inc.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Frances 'Brownie' Whittington, son, Thomas Edwin Whittington of Palm City, FL; and granddaughter, Heather Kathleen Whittington of Frederick, MD. He is also survived by a number of cousins.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be at 11:00 AM Friday, August 14, 2009, at Myers Park Baptist Church.
A reception will follow at the church in Heaton Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Myers Park Baptist Church Sunshine Fund, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207-0001.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the doctors, nurses and all staff persons at Presbyterian Hospital for all their kindness, efficiency and caring not only to Mr. Whittington but to all of his family as well.

Dear Brownie and Family,

I am so sorry to hear of Art's passing. I met him because of the 455th AAA, his unit during WWII. Art was the Medical Administrative Lieutenant attached to the Medics of the 455th AAA and provided me with 'war stories' and photographs of his time in service. He had such a good laugh every time we talked on the phone. The 455th AAA Reunion folks will say a special prayer for him..

Dear Brownie and Tom,

I am very sorry to learn of Art's death and extend my deepest sympathy to you. It was my pleasure to have spent more than 55 years as neighbors, to recall our years together in the development of the Mammoth Oaks community.

Peace be with you.

Dear Brownie and Tom,
We want you to know how sorry we are for your loss, yet how happy we are for the long and productive life Whit lived. In the intersection of our lives over the last 63 years we always found Whit a pleasure to be around. We will remember the fun of the 1996 trip as long as we are around!

We will not make the drive but I hope you will know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Love,
Jean & Sue
