Henry Nall Obituary
HENRY CLAY NALL III, died March 31, 2007 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis. He was born October 31, 1914 and was the husband of Mrs. Jane Weaver Nall to whom he was married for 63 years. He graduated from Pentecost-Garrison School for Boys, Central High School and Southwestern College (now Rhodes College) where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Mr. Nall was from one of the early families of Memphis, long identified with business, cultural and social affairs of the city. For over thirty years he was associated in business with his father in the H. C. Nall Cotton Company. His grandfather, H. C. Nall, Sr. was also a cotton merchant. His parents were Henry C. Nall, Jr. and Mrs. Sallie Joe Nall. In World War II he served as a First Lieutenant in the Army in the Chemical Warfare Corps. He met his wife during the War when she was a First Lieutenant in the Women’s Army Corps and they were married in the Chapel of the Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, D.C. After the War he was with the Army Reserve Corps and graduated from Command and General Staff School at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. He was an instructor in that school, as well as at the Reserves Headquarters in Memphis and at summer camps throughout the country. He retired as a Major. Mr. Nall was widely traveled, having been abroad many times. He was a former member of the Summit Club, the Exchange Club, the Retired Officers Association, and was a former member of the University Club, Dixon Gallery, and the Military Order of the World Wars. He also was a past President of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity Alumni Association. He was very active in Chickasaw Council of the Boy Scouts and served as Scoutmaster of Troop 21 for many years. He was one of the founders of Ra-Met Secret Society of the Cotton Carnival and was a former King of Ra-Met. Mr. Nall was a member of Bible Study Fellowship for many years and a member of Calvary Episcopal Church for forty years. He was one of the founders of Independent Presbyterian Church. He was a long time member of First Evangelical Church where he attended the Soltau-Morrow Sunday School Class and Triple L’s Senior Group. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Robin Smith (A. Eugene) of Memphis; his son, Henry C. Nall, IV (Marsha) of Memphis; seven grandchildren, Charlotte Smith, Rachel Anderson, Rebecca Smith, Sarah Nall Sapp, Jessica Nall Wright , Ruth Nall Blackburn and David Henry Nall. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Dr. Julian C. Nall (Christine) of Arlington, VA. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, in the Chapel of Elmwood Cemetery with the service to follow at 11 a.m. in the Chapel. Burial will immediately follow the service.
