Nicholas Sottile Obituary

Nicholas Joseph Sottile WALTHAM Nicholas Joseph Sottile, 88, of Waltham, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at the Newton Wellesley Hospital after a brief illness. The son of the late John and Nunziata (Inferrera) Sottile, he was born, raised and educated in Waltham and had been a lifelong resident, graduating from Saint Marys High School with the Class of 1937. Mr. Sottile took courses at both Boston University and University of Connecticut. He received his bachelor of arts degree with honors from Boston College with the Class of 1941, where he earned membership in the Cross and Crown Society and had participated in the Italian Academy, Boston College Dramatic Society, and Sodality and History Academy. An active member of the Boston College Alumni Association, he was an avid Boston College sports fan and a supporter of the Boston College Dramatics Society. He was a member of the Boston College Varsity Club after merging with the Touchdown Club. In 1991, he was honorary marshall at the Boston College Graduation Exercises and was inducted into the Boston College Order of the Golden Eagle. Mr. Sottile became a generous benefactor to the college. A veteran of World War II, he served with the United States Army as a lieutenant colonel in the North African and European Theatres. After attending officer candidate school and army intelligence school, he was assigned to the Allied Force Headquarters in Algiers, then attached to the British Armys CSDIC in No. Africa, and then becoming attached with the 3rd Infantry Division throughout Europe, then assigned to the United States Army Intelligence Forces in Austria. He received six Battle Stars for engagements in Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Po Valley and the North Apennines, and a Bronze Arrowhead for participating in the landing invasion of Sicily and Anzio-Nettuno. Upon returning stateside, he served with various Army Reserve Intelligence Units and ultimately as Commanding Officer of the 863rd Military Intelligence Detachment, Boston Army Base. A retired real estate broker, Mr. Sottile had worked with Coleman and Sons Realty in Waltham for 59 years and was a life member of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board. He was an active member of the Sacred Heart Parish in Waltham, serving as president of the Holy Name Society, chairmen of both the building and ground and parish CCD committees. A life member of the Reserve Officers Association of the United States, Paul Revere Chapter of the Retired Officers Association, Hanscom AFB, member of the Outpost Eleven, the Society of the Third Infantry Division US Army, a member of the Waltham Lodge Sons of Italy and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Waltham Council 147, he was also a director of the Coronet Investment Associates. He is survived by his dear sister, Mary N. Sottile of Waltham, his cousins, the LaRosa and Inferrera families, and many dear friends. Funeral services will be held on Monday morning, July 7, at 8 a.m. from the Brasco and Sons Memorial, 773 Moody St., Waltham, with a Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at the Sacred Heart Church, at 9 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow at the Saint Patricks Cemetery in Watertown. Visiting hours will held at the funeral home on Sunday, July 6, from 4 to 8 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Nicholas J. Sottile '41 Fund for Italian Studies, Boston College, 140 Commonwealth Ave., Chestnut Hill, MA 02467.
