Herman Shifflett Obituary

Herman Shifflett

Herman Shifflett,75, of Stanardsville, passed away Thursday, September 17, 2009, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born July 24, 1934, a son of the late John and Blanche Shifflett.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Wayne Shifflett; and a sister, Ruby Shifflett.

He was a carpenter by trade. He worked for Morris and Collier and Collier and Son until retirement. He loved hunting, family, and food. His love at last was mowing his lawn with his new John Deere tractor. He loved his great-niece, Macenna, whom he called "pretty baby". She made him smile a lot even in the bad times.

He was loved by all who knew him and will forever be greatly missed.

Thanks to a special cousin, Clarence Morris from Pennsylvania, who never failed to visit as often as he could and called as much. They grew up together and remained best friends throughout their lives.

He is survived by five sisters, Linda Koontz and her husband, Wayne, Clarris Shifflett and her husband, Everette, Allie Collier and her husband, Albert, all of Stanardsville, Pauline Morris and her husband, Harold, of Ruckersville, and Lutie Shifflett and her husband, Richard, of Earlysville; three brothers, Bradley Shifflett, Randolph Shifflett and Amos Shifflett and his wife, Phyllis, all of Stanardsville; one sister-in-law, Mary Gentry Shifflett of Stanardsville; one brother-in-law, Delma R. Shifflett of Ruckersville. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Thanks to a special friend, Otis Collier who visited many, many times even though he may not have known he was there with him.

Many thanks for the special care given by nurses and workers of the Hospice of the Piedmont who provided care and encouragement to him and the family.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday September 19, 2009, at the Ryan Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, September 20, 2009, at the Ryan Funeral Chapel with Rodney Locklear officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

The family suggest memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of the Piedmont, or a charity of one's choice.

Ryan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
