It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rodney Shifflett, who left us peacefully on March 5, 2026, at the age of 68. Born on April 12, 1957, in Charlottesville, Virginia, Rodney's journey through life was defined by his unwavering faith, love for his family, and passion for helping others.
Rodney was a man of faith who loved the Lord. He spent many years as a door-to-door life insurance salesman. He was a dying breed - a true people person; a role that suited his natural charisma and people skills. He had a gift for connecting with others and was always eager to lend a helping hand. He was a member of AA Gastonia where he led groups and helped advocate for others. Rodney loved nothing more than sharing stories from his childhood, bringing laughter and warmth to those around him. An avid baseball fan, Rodney never missed a chance to cheer for his favorite team, the New York Yankees, and he enjoyed sharing his enthusiasm for the game with family and friends. Rodney enjoyed spending time with family and his grandchildren on vacations.
He was a dedicated husband to his beloved wife, Abby Shifflett. He is also survived by his children, Rebecca "Angelene" Ponce', Allison Dawson (Josh), Stinton Shifflett (Hannah), Rhiannon Shifflett; stepson, Joseph "Jo Jo" Gathings; and his former spouse of 37 years, Deanice Shifflett, who was the mother of their children; proud grandfather to Jaden Love, Rhiannon Shifflett, Malachi Dawson, Micah Dawson, Havana Shifflett, Christine Dawson, and Raleigh Shifflett; nephew, Timothy Roberts, niece, Elizabeth Kelley.
Rodney was preceded in death by his parents, Marcus and Sallie Shifflett; sister, Aileen Roberts Ballenger; brother, Marcus Stinton Shifflett Jr.
Rodney will be remembered for his infectious smile, kind spirit, and the countless lives he touched throughout his journey. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those he loved.
A celebration of life will be held 2:00 pm on Monday, March 9, 2026, at South Gastonia Church of God, with Pastor David Caldwell, Pastor Adrian Franklin and Pastor Bob Gilley, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Rest in peace, Rodney. You will be deeply missed, but your legacy of love and kindness will forever inspire us.
