Smith was shot Jan. 6 while serving a felony warrant in Dallas. The popular officer, who died one day shy of his 18th year on the force, had an extensive knowledge of Dallas' gangs and was described by Police Chief David Kunkle as one of the department's finest police officers.
"I would have thought he was invincible," Kunkle said Tuesday night, choking back emotion. "He was a great, great street officer. He had the heart of a warrior."
Smith's death was believed to be the nation's first fatal shooting of an officer in the line of duty in 2009. He is the first Dallas officer shot to death in the line of duty since Mark Nix in 2007.
The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at The Potter's House, 6777 W. Kiest Blvd. in Dallas. Burial will follow at Restland Memorial Cemetery.

I served with Cpl Smith in the Marine Corps from 1986 to 1987. I knew him there as Cpl Smith, ironically that was his rank working with the Dallas PD. Norm was a special type of guy, as a young Marine, he took me under his wing and I am very thankful for all the lessons he taught me. To his family I offer my deepst symphaty. I saw his rememberence on the 1st 48 hours the other night. Rest in peace my brother! Eric Shedd SSgt USMC retired. Semper Fi Cpl Smith, keep em in line Marine.

I thought of you today and know that God is watching over you and your family. I do not know you personally, however I have been blessed to have several friends in law enforcement. I pray for their safety every day. My prayer for you is to find peace somewhere in all this. To know he was a GREAT man.

For Norman...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

"Policeman's Prayer"
When I start my tour of duty God,
Wherever crime may be,
as I walk the darkened streets alone,
Let me be close to thee.
Please give me understanding with both the young and old.
Let me listen with attention until their story's told.
Let me never make a judgment in a rash or callous way,
but let me hold my patience let each man have his say.
Lord if some dark and dreary night,
I must give my life,
Lord, with your everlasting love
protect my children and my wife.

God blessed you with 18 amazing years and you will forever be the love of his life. Nothing about this makes sense. To Regina Smith and Family, DPD Gang Unit, DPD, and all who knew and loved Norman.
I met him only once, and in that meeting there was no mistaking that this was a gentle giant. He was the kindest stranger I ever met. He seemed to have a "meets no strangers" personality.
While I did not know him as long as those who knew him best, his unique spirit revealed all it needed to. He was an amazing person put here to do amazing things. He lived out his ministry in this community and gave us what he came to share.
I pray for peace and that each and every day, the burden of heavy hearts and painful grieving grows lighter with each passing day. You can NEVER forget people like this man.
He was a blessing to this community, and we are very fortunate to have had this man serve and protect here.
Thank you Jesus for loaning him to us. As he rests peacefully in your arms now, I pray for peace in the hearts and minds of all that knew and loved him.
His assignment is complete, and he is in the best possible care now.
May God bless and keep you all. What an incredible legacy he has left behind.

To the Family of Officer Smith and DPD, me and my family send our condolescences! I knew him from the Pleasant Grove area, I would see him at Texaco from time to time, he would always smile and speak, and make sure everyone day was going alright. He would make sure that every teenager that he knew and didn't know was doing the right thing and making sure the gangs were set straight, he made sure he had role call, asking questions like who, where, when and why, before accusing!! He was an Officer that was really about change, and we all in our hearts need to say a prayer for a "Strong God Gifted Man",like Mr.Smith was and still is. Only if we let him grow within us as people and our officers, because, we still need some Firm
Believers, in our Kids and Within Ourselves, so if we can please Let His Gift Continue On to Protect and Serve the Right way!!! And to his lovely wife, you still have a Gift, that know one has never had, to be blessed with such "A Gift From God, Mr.Smith!! Keep Praying and Stay Strong in the Lord! Everything is going to be Alright...
Sincerly,

Officer Regina Smith
I would like to send my condolences to you and your family.
I did not get a chance to come into contact with officer Norman Smith, but as I read the paper everyday I can tell he was an inspiration to a lot of people. We hear all the time about officers being killed in the line of duty but for some reason I am mourning with you because of the type of person everyone says he was.
He is gone but he will not be forgotten. Heaven needed another good person, and God chose your husband.
Trust me you will cross his path again, and always stay prayed up, because God will get you through.

Regina and Family,
We would like you to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Norm and I were classmates at KHS. I will never forget a group of us including Norm driving the teachers crazy because we were always talking, laughing, and cutting up in class and of course getting in trouble in. His memory will always be with me because I will never forget him giving me a hard time about my "hick" accent all the while I would turn the table when he was saying a 'hick' word in his British accent. There was nothing like the sound of a British "Hick". I will never forget our funny happy times. He was a special person that will be missed by all. He made a large impact in many lives including my own. I teach high school myself today and will use his example to be a better teacher and encourage my students to be all they can be.
Thanks for touching my life and your memory will be with me always.
