David Thorne Obituary

Thorne, David White
Pittsford: July 26, 2008 at age 95. A native of Roswell, New Mexico, Mr. Thorne was a graduate of the University of Kansas, with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He worked with Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, NY for 41 years, in engineering and production management. During his years in Rochester, Dave was active in Boy Scouts, church work (Grace Methodist and Summerville Presbyterian) and many other community activities. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
When Dave retired in 1975, he and Harriett moved directly to Brevard, NC, building their home on Maple Street and actively entering into church and community life. Dave served the Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church as elder and Clerk of Session, and member of the choir. He was on the Brevard City Council, chair of the United Way, chair of the Transylvania County Library Board, active in Boy Scouts, on the board of The First Citizens Bank, and a Rotarian. When Dave and Harriett moved back to Rochester, they became members of Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church, where Dave sang in the choir and enjoyed the Thursday morning men's prayer group.
Mr. Thorne was predeceased by his loving wife of 68 years, Harriett C. Thorne, and son, David S. Thorne. He is survived by two daughters, Deborah T. (Gary) Leary of Rochester and Susan T. (Timothy) Nugent of Fort Myers, FL; and two sons, Marc E. (Barbara) Thorne of Darien, CT, and James G. (Jayne) Thorne of Indianapolis, IN. Mr. Thorne is also survived by grandchildren: Meaghan (Bryant) Tent; Devin (Alexis) Leary; Julie (Donald) Herndon; Jesse (Kazumi) Morton; John Thorne; Andrew (Jean Finnegan) Thorne; Rebecca (Stephen Vasas) Thorne; and Sara Thorne; step grandchildren Lisa and Patrick Nugent; great-grandchildren; Molly, Parker and Braden Tent; Rowan and Finnegan Leary; Samuel and Lily Herndon; Myka and Honoka Morton; Luke and Caleb Thorne; and step great-grandchildren: Jack, Charlie, Mary and Sam Kauffman.
A Memorial Service will be held at Downtown United Presbyterian Church, 121 N. Fitzhugh St., Rochester, NY, on Saturday, August 23, 2008, at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity. David has donated his body to the Anatomical Gift Program at the University of Rochester Medical School. Deb, My deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Dear Debby, Susan and Thorne family members: Your Dad was always available and helpful to me, especially in my teen years. I think I may have told you before that he "supervised" the assembly, in his basement on Oakridge Drive, of hi-fi equipment for the high school "teen room" at Grace Church. I have very fond memories of that activity, which always ended in going upstairs for a snack prepared by Harriet. Dave was always a key player in the annual MYF Christmas fruit cake baking extravaganza. And most personally, he wrote a letter in support of my application to be a Conscientious Objector to the draft and went with me and my Dad to the (successful) hearing before the Draft Board. He lived a great life and leaves a wonderful legacy behind.

The Criterion Class of Grace Methodist Church shrinks further with Dave's death. We will surely miss that wonderful group, which provided such love and support to all the members' children.
