During the course of my life, my father shared with me several accounts of his experiences in Europe during World War II with the Army Corps Of Engineers, but the best one was one he told to me only a couple of years ago. After the Surrender, Dad’s commanding officer was assigned to inspect some of Germany’s underground munitions plants. The main level of one plant was known to the Allied command, but Dad and his CO (probably a colonel—Dad referred to him as the “Old Man”) discovered yet another level below that one. One thing about that story Dad didn’t mention was that when an officer of the rank of Dad’s CO was given such an assignment, he usually brings along some junior officer, mostly to take notes. But Dad’s CO also needed Sgt. Gordon Miller for his expertise in heavy machinery, despite the fact that Dad by his own account didn’t always get on well with commissioned officers, “brass” being no exception. But the CO still needed this sometimes contrary staff sergeant, because Sgt. Miller was also known for being extremely conscientious about his duties. One tends to find people who care indispensible. This attitude was not unique to Dad’s military service—he took it with him to every task in civilian life, including that of raising those of us who are his sons. Speaking as “Old Sarge’s” firstborn, it took a few “miles on the odometer”, but I get the message.

Gordon "Gordy" is my Dad. I say Dad beause anyone can be a father. But it takes someone like him to be called Dad. I am very sure that he is fishin' with all those who had the fortune to go before
