Portland, Oregon: Died Tuesday, August 12, 2008. She was a Rochester native and lifelong Rochester resident where she lived with her husband Richard, who predeceased her in 1986. Vera is survived by her three children, Dr. Warren Wilhelm and his wife Judy, of Albuquerque, NM, Dr. J. Michael Wilhelm and his wife Donna, of Casco, ME and Judith Wilhelm Juhola and her husband Kirby, of Portland, OR. She had 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Vera had celebrated her 100th birthday just one week before her death from natural causes. She moved to Portland, Oregon in 2006 to be close to her daughter. In the past twenty years she had lived at Westgate at the Harbor in Irondequoit, Chapel Oaks on Portland Avenue, Cherry Ridge in Webster and The Springs in Milwaukie, Oregon. Vera lived independently until the time of her death.
Vera's family owned and operated Garnham Dairy in Rochester during the mid-last century. During her working career, she was employed by the Rochester Board of Education and the West Irondequoit School District. She was a strong supporter of public education. Vera remained vibrant and engaged and had written and published her autobiography with the support of her writing group. She was a member of the St. Paul Blvd. Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Two nephews, Robert Garnham and Norman Walz, of Rochester were most supportive of her during her later years in Rochester.
The family will receive friends Sunday, August 31, 2008 from 1:00-2:00pm at the funeral home, where her Memorial Service will follow at 2:00pm. Interment was held in private at Irondequoit Cemetery.
