Frank Summers Obituary

Summers, Frank V.
Irondequoit: Frank died on October 3, 2007, after a long courageous battle with lung disease. He was born on May 25, 1929, in Saint Paul, Nebraska, of Christina and Claude Summers and attended secondary schools in Omaha. In 1949 at age twenty he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering at Iowa State University. His two brothers who survive him, Alvin J. Summers, Houston Texas, and Howard W. Summers, Saratoga, California also attended Iowa State University as did his son Scott M. Summers.
Mr. Summers was employed by General Electric Company at several locations and Midrex Corporation, Charlotte, North Carolina. At GE he helped develop the manufacture of silicone products and industrial diamonds. While at Midrex Corp. he investigated alternative energy sources such as gasification of shale oil. During those years he published technical articles and was granted several patents. He was a licensed Professional Engineer in both New York State and North Carolina.
Mr. Summers had a strong sense of civic duty and served on committees and as an officer of organizations such as American Institute of Chemical Engi eers and the Mecklenberg County (N.C.) Humane Society. His sense of justice compelled him on numerous occasions to challenge local government zoning board decisions on large housing developments unfair to small landowners. One of his last projects was helping to design and fund a small building at a low income housing complex for after-school study by latchkey youngsters.
Mr. Summers is survived by his wife Eleanor; sons, Scott M. (Robin) Summers, and Drew D. (June) Summers; granddaughters, Kate, Beth and Antonnia and grandsons Jon M. (Lisa) Summers, Jersey City, NJ and Wylie Q. Summers, United States Army.
The family will receive friends and acquaintances on Sunday, October 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Foundation for Amy Cockcroft Nursing Scholarship, Rochester General Hospital, 1299 Portland Avenue, Rochester , NY 14621.

Dear Eleanor and family,

Frank was one of the nicest people to work with at Midrex. I really appreciated his honesty, integrity, and sense of humor both on the job and off.

May I offer all of your family my deepest sympathy to you on your loss.

getting to know Frank both in person and through the guest logs at Bailey Island over the years was a true priveledge. His intelligence, gentle caring for family and friends and sense of humor were wonderful models for us.
Our deepest sympathy is extended to Eleanor, Scott & Robin, Drew & June and their children.
