Merry Christmas Uncle BUD "Jimmy" :)
I know today is the Lord's Birthday and "we" should be glad and rejoice in it. But, today isn't the same without you. Now, you know I normally cook that BIG Christmas day brunch. Well, not this year, my heart just wasn't in it. Maybe, next year, it'll be different. We miss you like crazy, especially Simbah. He has no one to sit on the porch with at 3 a.m. Hopefully this time, my letter to you will go through. 'Cuz the last one I tried to send wouldn't go through. I think you did that on purpose. Well, let me go, I LOVE YOU UNCLE BUD.

James your dash has left a legacy that shall live on in those who were lucky enough to get to know you or whom you touched with your efforts to make the place they are in their lives better. I miss you James..my friend and confidant but I know your spirit lives on. You’ll always be apart of me. Thank you for the wonderful memories… they keep me smiling.

To the mother of James Slater, my Aunt Harriett DuVall Ponds called to tell me that my cousin died. I asked what cousin, and she said "Jimmy". I replied, I do not know him, and had no idea that my Uncle Melvin (only saw my uncle once) had a son. I am Virgie DuVall-Countee's daughter. My mom died in late 1969. I wish that I had met my cousin, he looks just like my oldest brother Theodore, they can pass for twins. I will add the Slater's name to the family tree. God bless you and your family. May his soul rest now in peace with God.

I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy to the Slater family on the loss of your beloved son, father, brother and uncle. James and I had the pleasure of meeting at Shaw University and our love and friendship for each still endured although we lost contact. "Rock" was a devoted father and son who cherished and respected life. He was a wonderful human being with a heart made of gold. He will truly be missed.

James was probably my best friend in school. We hung out a lot together there and even after we graduated. We played football and ran track and shared a lot of really good times. I had not seen him much in recent years but will always remember those days at Franklin and what a good and thoughtful friend he was to me. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I had the pleasure of meeting James in Durham, NC in 2000. We later became co-workers and great friends. We saw and treated eachother like family. The ONLY regrets I have,is not takng time to talk to James on a regular basis. James always refered to me as B.A.Y.Boy. James will definitely be missed by his extended family in NC. To his immediate family, I'm sorry for your loss and you will be in my prayers. Jamel "B.A.Y.Boy" and Nicole Hall.

I am sad to hear one of my childhood buddies has past. At an early age James showed compassion for others. When we went to junior high and high school this trait and others began to grow inwards as well externally. James in is quite but forceful style inspired many around him and I have always admired it from him. Living on Alphonse street was a joy and next to it is Barons street. James never left Rochester becuase I believe he thought he could make a difference. I hope that his senless death will not go with out meaning. So I send my condolence to his family and loved ones. 1 Corinthians 13
Love Is the Greatest
1 If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. 3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it;[a] but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.
4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
8 Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages[b] and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever!
13 Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.

Jimmy loved therefore he gave us the greatest gift he had to give. May you find comfort in God's Word, family and friends that are near and far. Jimmy will be truly missed and never forgotten.
