Joseph McPhie Obituary

Joseph M. McPhie Our "Gr8Scot" Our cherished father and grandfather returned home to his Heavenly Father on Dec. 7, 2008. Joseph Marshall McPhie was born on Sept. 28, 1921, into the loving home of Mary Marshall and Daniel Murchie McPhie. Joseph married his childhood sweetheart, Ruth Buehner, on July 5, 1945, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised six children while he received his bachelor's degree. He approached life with great enthusiasm and love. His devotion to his country led him to a long career in the Air Force. Starting as a bombardier in World War II, he flew 28 combat missions receiving many medals and honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and retired as a full Colonel after almost 32 years of service. After retiring from the military, he worked another 15 years in the Missionary Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, handling missionary issues throughout the world. He loved the spirit he felt there and treasured his many co-workers. He moved frequently with his military assignments, which gave him the opportunity to serve in many callings for the church. He served as a mission president four times: the Virginia Roanoke, Australia Sydney, Salt Lake Temple Square, and Scotland Edinburgh missions. He also served in many other callings and positions including bishop, district president in Vietnam, stake president, regional representative, temple sealer, and most recently as stake patriarch. He enjoyed playing his bagpipes with the original Utah Pipe Band. Although he was a thrifty Scot, he was extremely generous with his family and many charities. He was known for his great sense of humor, quick wit, and clever puns. The McPhie home was filled with love and laughter, and they became a close-knit clan. He will be remembered by his family for his warmth and tenderness, his love of beauty, his shining example, and his love and commitment to the Lord. Preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; daughter, Patricia; son-in-law, Rusty Crabb; and sisters Bessie and Margaret. He is survived by sister Mary Wilkins; brother Gary (Janet); brother-in-law, Al Knudsen; and children, Michael; Craig (Marilyn); Kathy Crabb; Rebecca (Clark) Reeder; and Deborah (Tim) Brown; 22 grandchildren; 24 great- grandchildren; and his faithful furry feline companions, Ting and Ling. Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 12, at 12 p.m. at the Holladay 25th Ward Chapel, 4650 S. Naniloa Dr. (2810 East). Friends may call Thursday, Dec. 11, at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, from 6:00-8:30 p.m., and Friday from 11:00-11:45 at the chapel. Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

Great man! He was my Bishop back in the Capitol Ward in Maryland in the 60's. Mom also worked with, or knew him well through CES. He was one of the inspirational figures in my early life along with President Rosza (his counselor). I can't imagine the number of people's lives he touched in positive ways. God Bless.

Dear Family,

Bonnie and I are saddened by the passing of your dear father, grandfather, Great grandfather, and friend. Joe was a very dear friend to us. When he and his family came to Roanoke, Virginia to preside over the Roanoke Virginia Mission we were very happy for the missionaries. He had a wonderful sense of humor and an engaging demeanor.

Over the years we have watched his service reach far and wide in the Church. We visited with him when he was in the Sydney Australia Mission. We are grateful to call him friend and brother.

We extend to you our love and condolences. He leaves a legacy of service and testimony the world over.

With love and sympathy,

Rex and Bonnie Pinegar

PS: We were unable to attend the funeral due to our being in California at the time. Sorry we could not be there and listen to the story of this noble man. Elder Lane Montgomery said he would extend our regards and love.

President McPhie was and is a great man. I had the privilege to serve as a missionary with him in Sydney. I was able to spend some time in the mission home and enjoyed every minute. He was always kind and understanding and a friend. He had a great sense of humor and smile that always put you at ease. I always felt that truly cared about each of us. I will be glad to see him when we meet again.

He was my bishop when I was a teenager. My sister, Carolyn, and I were friends with Kathy when the family was stationed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. I remember when he danced in his kilt for the Fairborn Ward. My thoughts go out to the family.

President McPhie was a great example to me. I served under him on Temple Square from May '93 to Nov '94. He was always smiling even when stressed. I appreciated his kind way of listening and the sound advice he always gave in our interviews. He will be missed!

Pres. McPhie was my mission director at Temple Square. He always had a smile on his face, and he loved to sing the patriotic songs in our meetings. He will be missed and I'm glad he is reunited with his sweet wife.

I was a young girl in Dayton, Ohio in the early 70's when i first met the McPhies..my sister Mendy was and is still good friends with Becky and Debbie. I clearly remember his booming voice and his wonderful smile. Looking at his picture posted here, he still reminds me of a younger Spencer Tracey. He was a Giant!
I'm thinking of you Becky, Debbie and family, your in my prayers.

Our good friend and BIshop (Fairborn, Ohio Ward) will be missed year after year as we try to get together the old "Fairborn Group". He is irreplaceable in many ways. A Christmas card, signed and addressed in his own hand, arrived in our mail today, just the day after his funeral, and brought us cheer to help us with our loss of his wonderful presence. God bless his wonderful family in their sorrow/

President McPhie was a great mission president. He had a unique brand of humour and his accounts of service in the missionary department and serving his country left us in no doubt the importance of our calling as missionaries. My brother served with him as an assistant and before returning home President Mcphie assigned us as companions! This was a great blessing and I owe the closeness I felt serving daily with my brother to this great man.

I will never forget him. My most treasured mementos of my mission in Virginia are President McPhie's beautifully handwritten transfer letters. They were always full of encouragement and love. They reflected his Christ-like love for all of his missionaries. They are now even more precious to me.

Joseph McPhie was a delightful man! He had a marvelous sense of humor--- this space is too small to mention all the times he had us laughing. Bless him on his next journey! May it be as full of wonderful experiences as those he has had while he was here.

President McPhie, you are in a happy reunion with your beloved Ruth, whom I'm sure you have missed these many years. It was a sweet companionship made in Heaven. You did so much to help this sometimes challenging missionary as my wonderful President in Virginia, and our associaton in Salt Lake City continued through the years. Your love and dedication to God, family, and country is without peer, and you have been a true role model through my life. I will truly miss you, Colonel/President McPhie. Heaven is all the richer because of you.

I'm honored to count myself among the thousands of lives who have been touched by President McPhie and his sweet wife Ruth. I served as a missionary with them in Virginia. I was inspired, uplifted, encouraged and blessed by President McPhie throughout my mission and his influence has carried on throughout my adult life. How I love this compassionate man of God. He will be greatly missed.

Our association with Brother McPhie came through his beautiful daughter, Kathy. We love the Crabb family so deeply and know how much they will miss this great family patriarch. He was always there to support and strengthen them and it was an honor to associate with him. It's so comforting to know that Brother McPhie is reunited with his sweet wife and our dear friend Rusty as well as other loved ones who proceeded him. Our love goes out to the entire McPhie clan!

President McPhie was our stake president and our home teacher when we lived in Beavercreek, Ohio. He was 1 of only 2 home teachers our step dad would ever come out of the back room for! His humor and his love for our family was a perfect draw for our dad, and always made us look forward to his visits. President McPhie--and your whole family--played a key role in helping our family connect with the gospel. We are eternally indebted and grateful. Our love and prayers are with you.

I had occasion to meet Bro. McPhie when I was serving in the Texas Mission in 1968 as a companion to his son Michael. He and a friend flew through Big Spring, Texas, stopping for fuel and took us to lunch.

I want to express my condolences to the family.

President McPhie came to Scotland on short notice due to our previous President's release for health reasons. In a time of uncertainty for us, his calm, steady, and loving spirit was truly heaven sent for our mission and for me personally. I will always remember him for his genuine kindness and truly valiant example.

Joseph McPhie was our Bishop when we lived in the Fairborn Ohio Ward in the early 60s and helped me through a serious accident when I was 15 years old. He was and is and always will be a great friend to our family. Best wishes to my buddies Mike and Craig and the girls!

Grandpa - We know you are with Grandma, Patty, Rusty, your parents and other loved ones. What a place to be! Although we are sad today, we know that you will always remain in our hearts and memories. I'll never forget our first meeting...at the airport as you and Grandma returned home from serving as Mission President in Scotland. I made sure I had my credentials in order, so you could approve me to marry your sweet granddaughter, Tiffany. I'm blessed to be part of your clan, and can't wait for the day to see you, Grandma, and Patty again. I also can't wait to meet my father-in-law, Rusty. What a great meeting that will be, although I feel like I know him well.

This Christmas won't be the same without your beautiful voice filling the room with Christmas Hymns...but we will know you will be there with us.

Off you go, into the wild blue yonder Grandpa...may your journey be wonderful until we meet again.

Love,

Patricia Nessen Donohue

Grandpa, how can we live in a world where you're not there? I'm so grateful to know that families are eternal, but I feel sad today. I'll miss your jokes and snowbird and christmases and all the other things that have always been a part of our lives. Tell Grandma hello! I love you!

My having had Pres. McPhie as a Mission President in Virginia changed my life and for this I will be forever in his debt. Our semi-regular visits, in person and by phone, always lifted my spirits and I know he enjoyed it as well because he even called me a couple times to tell me about how things were going in his life and to catch up on mine. What a wonderful man of God. Matt. 25:21 comes to mind and I can just imagine, “His lord [has already] said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” I will miss my good friend and mentor, and I look forward to the day we meet again.

You don't know me but when I was a Priest my Priests' advisor had served in the Roanoke Virginia Mission (Bruce Newman). After a trip (from Milwaukee) to the DC Temple, for baptisms, we visited Roanoke and President and Sister McPhie. President McPhie met with us and encouraged us in our plans to serve missions. It was a very memorable experience for me. May you be comforted in your loss.
