Sandy Alomar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 14 to Oct. 15, 2025.
Sandy Alomar Sr., the swift, sure-handed infielder who became a respected coach and the patriarch of one of baseball's great families, died October 13, 2025. He was 81.

Born Santos "Sandy" Alomar Sr. on October 19, 1943, in Salinas, Puerto Rico, he broke into the majors with the Milwaukee Braves in 1964 and played through 1978. He appeared with the Braves, Mets, White Sox, Angels, Yankees, and Rangers, valued for his speed and fielding.

Alomar earned his lone All-Star selection in 1970 with the California Angels. He finished his 1,481-game career with a .245 batting average, 13 home runs and 282 RBIs, and stole 227 bases. In 1971 he stole a career-high 39 bases, also leading the American League in at-bats and plate appearances.

After retiring as a player, Alomar embarked on a long coaching career. He served as San Diego's third-base coach from 1986 to 1990, and later coached with the Cubs, Rockies and Mets, while also managing winter ball at home in Puerto Rico.

His legacy extends powerfully through his sons. Sandy Alomar Jr., a six-time All-Star and 1990 AL Rookie of the Year, is a longtime Guardians coach. Roberto Alomar is a Hall of Fame second baseman and 12-time All-Star. The family connections that defined his life were forged in clubhouses from Puerto Rico to New York.

Sandy Sr and I have been friends since 1961, he was 16 at the time, we were teammates on the Quad-Cities Braves, Davenport, Iowa. Our Mgr Al Monchak asked me to help him get to and from the ballpark, we both had rooms at the YMCA. Been friends ever since. He was one great individual and respected by everyone that came in contact with him! Rest in peace "Iron Horse!"
