Though I did not know her, I worked with Vaughn many years ago through the BYUH Physical Plant and I also had the pleasure of knowing Rebecca Mossman before my mission. I just wanted to take this time again to thank you for TEACHING us. Thank you for bringing Carlene home,as I sat in the chapel that day what unveiled in front of me was the perfect outline of the Plan of Salvation. I felt very honored to be taught by the examples of your beloved wife and humbled to feel and witness the strength of your family. Thank you and God bless you and the children.

Aunty Carlene has always been a huge inspiration to me, raising so many children and showing them the importance of everything. I remember her as if yesterday, she had a million dollar smile and was always a great person to talk to even though I wasn't that close with her. She was such a loving person. I want to let you know that I will always pray for you and your family to recieve comfort from our Dear Father in Heaven. You and your family are wonderful. I am lucky and consider it a privilege to have been friends with Carlene since elementary days. My memories of Carlene are sweet. She was full of energy, fun to be around, hard working, always eager to learn new things, spiritual, and caring all at the same time. When I was informed about Carlene’s passing, I shed a few tears--and my daughter comforted me with a big hug as she whispered in my ear, “It’s okay mommy, Heavenly Father will take care of your friend.” I know Heavenly Father will take care of her, and He will also take care of you Vaughn and your family and all of us who love and miss Carlene. Carlene took the time to befriend our daughter Holly at her daughters hula lessons weekly. She welcomed Holly and included her in conversations weekly. This meant so much to Holly since she is new to the area. Holly said how kind and Christ like Carlene was in her daily life. What a wonderful quality to cherish the rest of our lives.

I am beside myself with grief today after receiving this news. Carlene was my best friend from 7th grade. Of all the hard times in a person's life, entering 7th grade is one of the "big ones." Carlene and I made fast friends and I'll never forget the times we spent together when she came up to Green Valley to our humble home, the marching band practices and the sleepovers at her house in Laie, her mom busy in the kitchen making ono sushi rice and other foods my mother didn't know how to make. We were always together in the clarinet section. She never made fun of my family, my many brothers and sisters or the fact that we were extremely poor. She always shared what she had to eat, many times my parents couldn't afford even $2 to buy saimin when Kahuku's games took us to town. The late night talks and the notes we passed in school about the boys we liked and our plans for the week. (I still have them all.) As the years passed and our lives separated, I never forgot what she taught me about what it means to be a true friend. I will always treasure Carlene. You raised a precious person. Please let me know when I can come to Laie to honor her.

Carlene and I were companions for six months in Aomori, Japan. I had a wonderful mission because of her. Missionary work wasn't easy but because of Calene's big smile, kind and caring words, sense of humor, patience, fogiving heart, strong testiomony and love for the Lord and people aroud her indluding me, I could get up every morning and did the Lord' Work with her. My heart and prayers are with all of you at this time. I knew Carlene to not only to have a smile on her face all the time, but one who did everything with conviction! She was very steadfast in her beliefs and actions. I knew her best from growing up in the church and also from being in the band. I didn't know Carlene although we are in the same stake. However, I sat behind her and her wonderful family at Melissa's homecoming and remember the spirit that radiated from her. We have so many good memories with your family- I remember my first date with John, you guys were there and his parents. It was a good example to see what dating really is and how a couple should be. I also really admired Carlene and how well she took care of everyone. Once while babysitting your kids, I noticed her calendar for the month had the chores, meals and events all down. I really wanted to learn her ways someday. And John has always admired Vaughn's parenting, especially with the boys. It was so sad when you moved away, but we loved when you came for visits. We also wished we could get to Utah easier. You are both such great examples to us.

I only knew Carlene for 3 and a half years, but I feel as though she was a dear friend of mine. She always treated me with kindness and patience and I will never forget her as a wonderful example to me as a wonderful mother and deciple of Jesus Christ. I was deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death of my friend Carleen who was a good friend from BYU-Hawaii. I have many great thoughts and memories of time with Carleen and working with her as a tour guide at PCC. The word that comes to me when I think of Carleen is the word "perfect". Dear family of Carlene,
I was profoundly heartbroken to learn of the passing of Okimoto Shimai, as I knew her. I had the privilege of serving with Carlene in the Japan Sendai mission. I cannot think of her without that dazzling smile on her face and her long beautiful black hair. She was a true lady, beautiful, kind to all, sweet, and a great missionary. She was always asked to lead the music whenever we had missionary conferences, and I remember she always smiled throughout the entire hymn. The suddenness, and emptiness of such a loss is incomprehensible; except when you view things with an eternal perspective. I was shocked to learn of Okimoto-shimai's death. She was one of the sweetest and most spiritual Shimai's I recall from our Sendai Mission. She left a lasting impression. May God bless you and your family forever more after this great loss.

Dear Brother Mossman and family,
It has been eighteen years since I first met Carlene in the mission field of the Japan Sendai Mission. I read in my journal an entry I wrote of Carlene and share it with you: "She was my most favorite companion because she worked hard all of the time and helped me (and smiled always!). I knew I could count on Carlene to keep going even when we were tired." Three short months is all the time we spent together, but her enthusiasm and spirit have been emblazoned on my memory forever. Now I express my deepest sympathy to you and your family at Carlene's passing from this life. It seems she was a very wonderful wife and mother. She had to be; she was a great missionary and companion in the field! I pray that her strength will remain with you now as you try to press on. May the peace of the Comforter be with you. Though many years have passed, we will always remember our love and associations with Carlene. We were neighbors in Laie. Carlene lived in the front house and we lived in the back. She and Michelle were sweet friends.

I knew Carlene from the hawaiian cultural center in Midvale where our daughters learned hula together. I have only known Carlene a few months and she has affected my life greatly. I watched how she smiled and the great love she showed to her children. She truly was dedicated to her family. We discussed all the mundane things of life and now that she is gone those seem less mundane. I looked forward to seeing her every week. I remember the first day I met Carlene at Laie Elementary school in Hawaii. Her family had just moved to Laie and we became instant friends. Through the next three decades we went to dances together, laughed together, attended seminary together. We even fought over a few boys together. We both served our missions in Asia. Carlene in Japan and I in Korea. Our letters to each other came quicker than any we would receive from back home in Hawaii. We supported each other, loved each other, and became each other's strength while we were so very far away from home. Returning home from our missions we continued our schooling together, each getting married and moving on with our lives. Any time we met up again after that it was like we had never been apart. Our children, who are approximately the same ages, became instant friends and took up just like she and I always would. As if we had never been apart. As if no time had ever passed in between our visits. My children always referred to Carlene's family as their "hawaiian cousins". Whether it was in Laie, Sandy, or Woods Cross Carlene and her family were always a part of our family. We are devestated about her passing. We send our deepest sympathy to Vaughn and the children. To Bro. and Sis. Okimoto who always welcomed me into their home. And to the many, many people who's lives Carlene touched while she was here on earth. We struggled this week to understand why such a beautiful spirit is taken and leaving behind her young beautiful family. Our last meeting with Carlene was in July 2006 in front of the Laie Temple with our youngest son JT just returning from his mission. Carlene and her beautiful children were visiting "home" for the summer. We will always remember her sweet spirit and enduring testimony. What a great example she has been for us all!

As a freshman there, I also remember fielding questions from quite a few people as to whether I had a sister on campus... :) (They were referring to Carlene--What an honor to be associated with her!)
