Carlene Eiko Okimoto Mossman

Carlene Mossman Obituary

Carlene Eiko Okimoto Mossman 1967 ~ 2007 We were extremely saddened by the loss of our precious wife, daughter, mother, and friend. Carlene Eiko Okimoto Mossman (age 40) died on March 27, 2007 after giving life to her sweet baby daughter, Carly. Carlene was born in Whittier, California, on February 3, 1967 to Howard and Jean Haraguchi Okimoto. She, like her parents, was an educator and loved teaching children. She grew up in the Laie community where she established a foundation of love and life long friendships that she cherished throughout her life. She graduated from Kahuku High School in 1985 as the salutatorian and received the David O. McKay Scholarship to attend Brigham Young University Hawaii. While in high school, she participated in the Red Raider Marching Band and National Honor Society. Carlene served in the Sendai, Japan Mission from 1988 to 1989 and loved the people she served. Her service there is still felt in the lives of those she taught the gospel. After returning from her mission, she graduated in 1991 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University-Hawaii. Carlene was a beautiful hula dancer and performed at the Polynesian Cultural Center night show while attending BYU-Hawaii. Carlene was married and sealed for time and all eternity to Vaughn L. Mossman on August 31, 1991 in the Laie, Hawaii Temple. They made Laie their home where Carlene enjoyed teaching at Kahuku Elementary School. Five of Carlene's children were born in Laie - Valen, Clint, Vaughn, Caylee and Caily. Cole and Carly were born in Sandy, Utah where the family currently resides. Carlene was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her life was filled with compassion and charity. Her ability to nurture, care for and love people touched the lives of so many including her children to whom she dedicated her life. Her loving smile, warm embrace and soothing voice will be sorely missed. Her memories will be cherished and treasured. Carlene leaves behind her loving and devoted husband, Vaughn; seven beautiful children; her parents, Howard and Jean Okimoto; brothers, Cary (Noriko) Okimoto and Curt (Ramona) Okimoto. She is also survived by her father-in-law, Bruce Mossman Sr. (Pam); and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. The family would like to express their deep gratitude and appreciation for the wonderful care that Carlene received at the University of Utah Critical Care Unit. The family is also grateful to the members of the Mesa Park Ward and the many friends and family that have given so much of their time, service, love and support to Vaughn and his family. Your prayers and expressions of love have blessed and touched our lives. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 2, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sandy Alta View Stake Center, 1850 E. 8600 So., Sandy, UT. A viewing will be held on Sunday, April 1st from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday, April 2nd from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Stake Center. Carlene will be buried in the Laie, Hawaii Cemetery. A "Carlene Mossman Memorial Fund" has been established at America First Credit Union (account no. 9031840).

My humblest sympathies go out to the Okimoto and Mossman families at this time, for their loss of Carlene. Though I did not know her, I worked with Vaughn many years ago through the BYUH Physical Plant and I also had the pleasure of knowing Rebecca Mossman before my mission. My family and I are thinking about you all during this time. Much love and aloha all the way from Oregon.

Vaughn,
I just wanted to take this time again to thank you for TEACHING us. Thank you for bringing Carlene home,as I sat in the chapel that day what unveiled in front of me was the perfect outline of the Plan of Salvation. I felt very honored to be taught by the examples of your beloved wife and humbled to feel and witness the strength of your family. Thank you and God bless you and the children.

Dear Vaughn, children, Okimoto, and Mossman families--

I am lucky and consider it a privilege to have been friends with Carlene since elementary days. My memories of Carlene are sweet. She was full of energy, fun to be around, hard working, always eager to learn new things, spiritual, and caring all at the same time. When I was informed about Carlene’s passing, I shed a few tears--and my daughter comforted me with a big hug as she whispered in my ear, “It’s okay mommy, Heavenly Father will take care of your friend.” I know Heavenly Father will take care of her, and He will also take care of you Vaughn and your family and all of us who love and miss Carlene. My prayers, thoughts, and deepest sympathies are with you.

Vaughn and Family,

We just wanted you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. The services for Carlene were beautiful! There was an undeniable spirit present there that bore witness to the truthfulness of the gospel and Heavenly Father's plan for each one of us! What a blessing it has been to have crossed paths with Carlene and your beautiful family. Carlene had a very special light in her eyes that all who knew her could see. The children carry that same exact light in their eyes! What a beautiful reminder of her you will have surround you forever--seven tender, sweet children! Our gratitude to you for the opportunity we had to honor her life this week. Our lives have been deeply touched and our hearts are changed for the better because of Carlene's exemplary life.

With Aloha,

Carlene took the time to befriend our daughter Holly at her daughters hula lessons weekly. She welcomed Holly and included her in conversations weekly. This meant so much to Holly since she is new to the area. Holly said how kind and Christ like Carlene was in her daily life. What a wonderful quality to cherish the rest of our lives.

Sunday Mariteragi

April 4, 2007

In Honor of Carlene:

"I Return with Love"

My dear little childen, it's okay to cry
There's a great plan, for you and I
"unreal" I know, its seems far out to sea,
But, life is eternal...grandpa Howard taught me.

One never knows just how long we all stay,
But, I want you to know I've had many a day.
Yes,not as long...how could that be;
A "test" of the Master...Grandma Jean taught me.

Of course, I'll miss you all and my "eventful one;"
Please remain steadfast, our work is not done.
Call upon Him, cry with heart and soul;
Keep true to the faith, our eternal goal.
We must be a special family,
This "test" is quite hard
But, thus we were chosen,
Our love for the Lord.

Look for the that rainbow,
Lay back in the sun;
See a star twinkle,
I'm in ....that one!

Oh, please remember even in the rain,
After the clouds, the days are not vain.
Angels are real, you don't have to see,
Just call from your heart, when you miss me.

Help one another...so easy to say
You know you can rely on; you were taught to pray.
Be kind to each other, accept loving hands;
Be sure to hug Daddy, of this I command.

Dad and I
best of friends...weren't we!
We were such a great duo,
Then a trio to six...
Now 7...we're a mural!

Take care my dear family...a mural it will be,
Just splash on some love and that...will be me!
Take care my dear family and my beloved companion
I love you always; an eternal reunion.

Mom, Dad, and of course, my 2 brothers
Be strong for my family, I lived for no other
Now I return, with love I was smothered
I accepted my call as a wife and a mother,
With this you all know
My love is forever.

Aloha Vaughn, Keiki and 'Ohana
Love,
Aunty Sunday, Uncle Raymond
and entire Mariteragi Family

To the Okimoto & Mossman Ohana:
I am beside myself with grief today after receiving this news. Carlene was my best friend from 7th grade. Of all the hard times in a person's life, entering 7th grade is one of the "big ones." Carlene and I made fast friends and I'll never forget the times we spent together when she came up to Green Valley to our humble home, the marching band practices and the sleepovers at her house in Laie, her mom busy in the kitchen making ono sushi rice and other foods my mother didn't know how to make. We were always together in the clarinet section. She never made fun of my family, my many brothers and sisters or the fact that we were extremely poor. She always shared what she had to eat, many times my parents couldn't afford even $2 to buy saimin when Kahuku's games took us to town. The late night talks and the notes we passed in school about the boys we liked and our plans for the week. (I still have them all.) As the years passed and our lives separated, I never forgot what she taught me about what it means to be a true friend. I will always treasure Carlene. You raised a precious person. Please let me know when I can come to Laie to honor her.

Dear Vaughn & the Children,
Carlene and I were companions for six months in Aomori, Japan. I had a wonderful mission because of her. Missionary work wasn't easy but because of Calene's big smile, kind and caring words, sense of humor, patience, fogiving heart, strong testiomony and love for the Lord and people aroud her indluding me, I could get up every morning and did the Lord' Work with her. She is a variant warrior for this latter-day and she is a very special daughter of our Heavenly Father. I would like to celebrate what a woderful person she became in such a short time in this earth life and I will follow her examples until I see her again.

Dear Mossmans and Okimotos,
My heart and prayers are with all of you at this time. I knew Carlene to not only to have a smile on her face all the time, but one who did everything with conviction! She was very steadfast in her beliefs and actions. I knew her best from growing up in the church and also from being in the band. I remember that when we didn't do something that needed to be perfect she would make us, the clarinets, do it over and over. She was very patient.
I know that Heavenly Father will send His divine angels to comfort you at this time. May His choicest blessings be upon each of you.
Love and Aloha,

Aloha Mossman 'Ohana,
We are so sorry for your loss at this time. Please accept our offer to help in any way we possibly can.
We have so many good memories with your family- I remember my first date with John, you guys were there and his parents. It was a good example to see what dating really is and how a couple should be. I also really admired Carlene and how well she took care of everyone. Once while babysitting your kids, I noticed her calendar for the month had the chores, meals and events all down. I really wanted to learn her ways someday. And John has always admired Vaughn's parenting, especially with the boys. It was so sad when you moved away, but we loved when you came for visits. We also wished we could get to Utah easier. You are both such great examples to us.
We will always cherish our friendship and want you to know we are always here for you.

Dear Vaughn, Mossman Children, and the Okimotos,

I was deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death of my friend Carleen who was a good friend from BYU-Hawaii. I have many great thoughts and memories of time with Carleen and working with her as a tour guide at PCC. The word that comes to me when I think of Carleen is the word "perfect". Dear family of Carlene,
I was profoundly heartbroken to learn of the passing of Okimoto Shimai, as I knew her. I had the privilege of serving with Carlene in the Japan Sendai mission. I cannot think of her without that dazzling smile on her face and her long beautiful black hair. She was a true lady, beautiful, kind to all, sweet, and a great missionary. She was always asked to lead the music whenever we had missionary conferences, and I remember she always smiled throughout the entire hymn. She was a great person, and my heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to all of you.

Dearest Vaughn and Mossman Keikis'....

Although our hearts are crying along with you as we miss Carlene, we absolutely know that she is moving on to something that is needful of her and all of her wondrous gifts, talents, and faith. Our lives are sweeter because of Carlene's example of Christ like living. We love her! We love you! You're in our prayers and our thoughts. Hugs and aloha to the children...with much love, The Gilmans'

The suddenness, and emptiness of such a loss is incomprehensible; except when you view things with an eternal perspective. I was shocked to learn of Okimoto-shimai's death. She was one of the sweetest and most spiritual Shimai's I recall from our Sendai Mission. She left a lasting impression. May God bless you and your family forever more after this great loss.

Dear Brother Mossman and family,

It has been eighteen years since I first met Carlene in the mission field of the Japan Sendai Mission. I read in my journal an entry I wrote of Carlene and share it with you: "She was my most favorite companion because she worked hard all of the time and helped me (and smiled always!). I knew I could count on Carlene to keep going even when we were tired." Three short months is all the time we spent together, but her enthusiasm and spirit have been emblazoned on my memory forever. Now I express my deepest sympathy to you and your family at Carlene's passing from this life. It seems she was a very wonderful wife and mother. She had to be; she was a great missionary and companion in the field! I pray that her strength will remain with you now as you try to press on. May the peace of the Comforter be with you. God Bless you all.

Sincerely,
Carmen Christensen French

Dear Vaughn and Family we are saddened by the passing of carlene. Both Heidi and I are grateful for the example you and carlene have set, by serving missions and being married in the temple. We have always admired the way you and carlene have raised your family. On my mission I used to show everyone the video clip of carlene singing "Called to Serve". That memory will always be with me. May God bless you and your Children. Our love also goes out to the Okimoto family, carlene was raised and loved by great parents. We love you all.

Though many years have passed, we will always remember our love and associations with Carlene. We were neighbors in Laie. Carlene lived in the front house and we lived in the back. She and Michelle were sweet friends.
We are saddened to hear of her passing and pray the Lord to bless her husband and children. And to the Okimotos we send our Aloha and sympathy.

Dear Mossman Family,
I knew Carlene from the hawaiian cultural center in Midvale where our daughters learned hula together. I have only known Carlene a few months and she has affected my life greatly. I watched how she smiled and the great love she showed to her children. She truly was dedicated to her family. We discussed all the mundane things of life and now that she is gone those seem less mundane. I looked forward to seeing her every week. Though I didn't know her long I considered her a friend, a mentor, and a sister. My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to you and yours. Much love.

I remember the first day I met Carlene at Laie Elementary school in Hawaii. Her family had just moved to Laie and we became instant friends. Through the next three decades we went to dances together, laughed together, attended seminary together. We even fought over a few boys together. We both served our missions in Asia. Carlene in Japan and I in Korea. Our letters to each other came quicker than any we would receive from back home in Hawaii. We supported each other, loved each other, and became each other's strength while we were so very far away from home. Returning home from our missions we continued our schooling together, each getting married and moving on with our lives. Any time we met up again after that it was like we had never been apart. Our children, who are approximately the same ages, became instant friends and took up just like she and I always would. As if we had never been apart. As if no time had ever passed in between our visits. My children always referred to Carlene's family as their "hawaiian cousins". Whether it was in Laie, Sandy, or Woods Cross Carlene and her family were always a part of our family. We are devestated about her passing. We send our deepest sympathy to Vaughn and the children. To Bro. and Sis. Okimoto who always welcomed me into their home. And to the many, many people who's lives Carlene touched while she was here on earth. Love, Lisa, Arnold, Lisa Nicole, Kenny and Jessica

Our deepest love and aloha to Vaughn the children and the family. I know Carlene from BYUH being involved in the pageant she entered and PCC at the night show. She was a beautiful dancer and singer and was a very friendly and kind individual. She will soarly be missed by all. God be with you 'till we meet again. May we all remember the lessons she taught us all.

We struggled this week to understand why such a beautiful spirit is taken and leaving behind her young beautiful family. Our last meeting with Carlene was in July 2006 in front of the Laie Temple with our youngest son JT just returning from his mission. Carlene and her beautiful children were visiting "home" for the summer. We will always remember her sweet spirit and enduring testimony. What a great example she has been for us all!
Vaughn and children, the Okimoto family, may the good Lord bless you and give you comfort at this time. How wonderful it is to know that it is but a small moment that we shall part with her, and we will soon see her again in the hereafter to embrace her once more.

Dear Vaughn, the Okimoto & Mossman Ohana,
I am so sorry for your sudden loss. Carlene was truly one of the nicest people I've ever known. She never spoke an unkind word and exuded charity in her countenance. I will always remember her examples of kindness but mostly her friendship. It was my honor to have known her.

Dear Mossmans,
How lucky we were to get to know you through the Petersen family. We looked forward to the yummy shave ice in Wendover and Carlene's incredible smile that came with it. I want you to know of the huge influence she has had on our family even though she didn't know us well. Our kids have always enjoyed being in school with your children. To the Mossman and Okimoto Ohana,

We were deeply saddened by the news of Carlene's passing. I have fond memories of Carlene's calm spirit and ever-smiling face while taking classes with her from Kajiyama-Sensei at BYU-Hawaii. As a freshman there, I also remember fielding questions from quite a few people as to whether I had a sister on campus... :) (They were referring to Carlene--What an honor to be associated with her!)

Although I haven't seen her in these many years since we left Laie, good news also travels, and I continued to hear of her wonderful example as an exemplary wife and mom in Zion.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time. May the Lord's blessings be upon you...

Much love,
Alyssa (Soon) Tenney & Ohana

*I'm very saddened by the news! Carlene was know by many of us from Laie as ms. "smiley" because she never ever forgot to smile on a good or bad day! Carlene was such a genuine individual who was so full of love, grace and wisdom. All them memories of you in elementary, high school and at BYU-H will never be forgotten!*

Mossman & Okimoto Ohana,

My Condolences to you all. Her passing leaves much heartache that no one can heal but LOVE leaves those memories no one can steal! Yes, it will be difficult for all of us to see beyond the sorrow, but looking back in her memory will help comfort us tomorrow. Remember, "Families are Forever!"
