Jerald Tanner Obituary

Jerald D. Tanner 06/01/38 ~ 10/01/06 Jerald D. Tanner, age 68, died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, due to complications associated with Alzheimer's disease. He was born June 1, 1938, in Provo, Utah, to George and Helen Tanner. He married Sandra McGee on June 14, 1959, in Mission Hills, California. He graduated from West High School, attended the University of Utah and graduated from Salt Lake Trade Technical Institute in 1959. After a few years as a machinist Jerald launched his own business, Modern Microfilm Co. and began publishing historical research. He closed his business in 1983 and established the non-profit organization Utah Lighthouse Ministry, which continues to publish his research. He authored more than forty books, including "Mormonism-Shadow or Reality?", and in 1980 his book "The Changing World of Mormonism" was published by Moody Press. For many years Jerald served on the board of the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake, volunteered in the office and held prayer time with the men throughout the week. He also served as an Elder and was on the Governing Board for Discovery Christian Community. He was a quiet man who loved to pray and memorize scriptures. He also enjoyed walks, hikes, Jazz games, animals, and an occasional practical joke, especially if it was his idea. We will all miss his keen mind, sense of humor and gentle teasing. Jerald's commitment to Christ was an inspiration to many people. Jerald was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ruth Mellor. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; three children, April (Brian) Muegge, Dennis (Sherri) Tanner, Teresa (Chuck) Vanderpool; five grandchildren, Nathan, Samuel, Vanessa, William and Brandi; two sisters, Irene (Carl) Bonner and Evelyn (Chris) Miller; plus numerous nieces, nephews and his special friends and co-workers, Wendell, Marlene, Mark and Tony. During Jerald's long illness, he was lovingly cared for by his wife of 47 years until the final four days of his life. The family wishes to thank all those at CareSource Hospice facility for their compassion and support. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the Salt Lake Christian Center, 4300 South 700 East, Murray, Utah. The family will receive visitors from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made in Jerald's memory to the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake or CareSource Hospice. Condolences may be sent to [email protected]

Jerald's book,"Mormonism, Shadow or Reality" is a wonderful account of Mormon history backed by documents that bear out Jerald's and Sandra's quest for the truth, and for publishing it for everyone.

Sandra!
We have traveled a long journey together from the first years of my conversion you and Jerald were my most avid supporters and best friends. I will miss him and his contribution to ministry.
In 1969 right after I was saved by the Lord and was in Bible school preparing for ministry, I met you, I had no money for your books, and you guys had very little yourself. You gave me some of your works. I still have those books Thanks for believing in me.

To stand for truth in Christ and teach others is the very purpose of our being. No greater gift can we offer to others. We are all mortal and none of us are perfect but praise the Lord for those who try. I thank the Lord for the time we had with this COURAGEOUS man in Utah. I pray for strength for all of us left. May the work continue.

Only in eternity will we fully know just how much Jerald Tanner touched the world for the cause of Christ. For those of us fortunate enough to have known him personally his impact was not just through his research and writing (impressive as it is) but in the life he lived each day to make real the love of God to those around him.

I have read a substantial amount of Jerald's (and Sandra's) research and it was rare that I ever agreed with it. HOWEVER, I saw him as a man who valiantly fought for what he honestly believed. He would not accept at face value an arguement, however positive to his research, without first checking it out throughly. We call that integrity. My condolences to Sandra and the family and may God Bless you all.

Dear Tanner Family,
May the lord comfort you at this time of loss.Although I never personally met your Husband/father/Grandfather,I am certain that I speak for many Christians in the valley when I say he was an inspiration to us all.I feel a light has passed out of our presence and into the presence of our King.We are grateful for his courage and perserverance. His dedication to the truth is so wanting in our day, but as the savior said in Jn.8:32 it is the truth that sets us free. Jerald was a true freedom fighter and he will be deeply missed. Thank you for sharing him with us for a little while.

Jerald Tanner HAS changed the world. The world WILL notice even if they are not conscience of it. His life has touched so many that no one will ever know the sum total... Here is an illustration that I wish I could paint for you, but just picture my words: His Christian character that drove his work was dropped into the sea of humanity and the ripples are going out across this sea so far reaching that you may never see the end, nor will it end. Many knew of him in Salt Lake, next, spreading throughout Utah, then looking farther, people who have left Utah or share his works, his character, with relatives in other states know of him - his influence goes out farther and farther! Don't forget, his books will continue to change lives for as long as the ink is legible on the paper. And don't mistake this: His life goes on forever in God's Kingdom where he will bless us when we are with him again.

To the Tanner family, with my deepest sympathy: For the last 2 and a half years since moving from Utah, I have read as much of Jeralds work and word as I can get my hands on. Ufortunatly, I had never heard of this brilliant man until I moved from Utah. Otherwise, I would have loved to pick his brain and get some answers that I have much needed. A very dear friend of mine in Nebraska contacted Sandra to inquire about a custody case I was battling with Utah County and the LDS church. This friend was appauld to hear that what sounded so absured from my mouth, sounded founded and real from the Tanners. We spent the whole day reading about Jeralds findings and beliefs. I was looking to move back to Utah and came across his obituary. I am so thankful that I did so that I can let the family know what a wonderful, brilliant and influential man Jerald was to someone who had never met him.

I was one of the unknown thousands of people touched by Jerald's meticulous research and writting. The few occasions I had the privilege of talking with Jerald I was impressed by his soft spoken manner and true humility. Jerald Tanner was a man of integrity and courage who was not afraid to speak his own personal truth- no matter the cost.

I never met Jerald Tanner but visited his bookstore frequently. I always left feeling grateful for his talent and gift, and at the same time a little amazed @ his bravery and perserverance and also Sandra's for that matter. I sincerely hope the bookstore will continue. My heartfelt condolences to his family and I submit his passing will indeed be felt even on a global level even though not perhaps on a high profile arena; it surely will be felt by those far and wide that appreciated and needed his work. Gods blessings ~ 'til you all meet again.

May the memory of Jerald's life and the work that continues on be a beacon to the lost and hopeless. There is no way to count the number of lives that have been influenced by this one life of one of God's faithful! May we rejoice in the knowledge that this is one man who heard, "Well DONE thou GOOD AND FAITHFUL Servant!"

With love and sympathy and prayers for those left behind to carry on the memory and the work...

A DEATH UNNOTICED

The world will survive the death
of my father -
Life will not screech to a halt
at the news.
There will be no mention on CNN
Or scroll-bys on MSNBC,
No billboards will flash in
Times Square.

His death will be but a drop
Into a bucket full of faceless
deaths,
One of a myriad on that average day.

And yet, with his passing
Will go one of the best men
I've ever known -
A man who was kind
To even the smallest of animals,
Who shared his time and money
With the poor and rejected,
A man who took seriously his roles
Of husband, father and son,
A man who did his best
With the two-pair hand life
Dealt him.

The world will not notice
his absence,
But I will grieve none the less.
